The Shining any good? I'd feel like a Potterfag reading anything by Stephen King
>>9205796
Just watch the movie it's better than the book comparable to others in their field
I'd tried it once. Got to page 200ish and quit
King gives most of the climax away within the first two or three chapters. Then expects you to be scared of a fire hose.

that is the problem with living for a very long time. eventually, a significant portion of the population will be related to you in some way.
my biggest problem with Heinlein is how his characters so often break their balls to travel to another star system.. in a ship that can travel faster than the speed of light.. and as soon as they land.. they break out the donkey and the moldboard plough and start farming fucking Okra. like it's Missouri, 1902.

Every gay person I know loves him, so yes, I guess he is.

The Stranger
Has anyone here read it? Is it good?
>>9205166
You'll burn through it. Have a fondness for ol' Jacques Barzun. Gives little critiques throughout on the historians he admires. Good source for other books, and helpful-lite on those 500 yrs, as well.
>>9205166
yeah it was pretty decadent.

This. It's a really good book.
What is the best economics book and why is it pic related?
talk abotu synchronicity. (or maybe bader meinhof?) i was just reading this in the library yesterday. what's the critical concensus on georgism? seems like a nice philosophy for anyone who doesnt already own a land monopoly
>>9205160
This is a great point. I don't believe it's about whether you have it or not, since anyone with a lot of money can give it away, the message is one of social philosophy.
Honestly, without privatization of land, it seems like all increase in productive capacity goes to the laborers. Of course, economists like Ricardo, who fully believe the margin of cultivation to be something static and any increase in productive efficiency accruing to the capitalists who use them, would disagree with this notion.
But what is ultimately interesting is whether or not it is TRUE. Simply put, I would like to see some empirical evidence from both sides. I would like to air on the side of Geoism rather than Ricardianism, but it seems to me economists like Keynes side with Malthus, believe it or not.
Overall I think his social philosophy is profound. It's a game changer, this book, and turns the bilateral tug of war on its head. But it's something that Adam Smith complained about, so it must have been a problem for at least two and half centuries-- landlords accruing excess monetary output.
No, you know what, this has been going on for as long as private property and tribal warfare existed, the feudal barons used to hoard food as evidence of wealth. The message is timeless: a progressive mentality that even a wholesome God would want his civilization to have is this: de-privatize land.
I read slowly and my favourite series is Harry Potter.
I average about 1 book every 3 years.

That doesn't make any sense, even if you honestly believe knowledge and intelligence can be separated. Newborn infants' brains are happy sponges, but massively unformed. They're missing most of the pathways to even process the tests we use for intelligence.

"it would appear we are approaching a denouement. quietly filing out into some dim lobby shortly thereafter for complimentary garbage-merlot and "poignant" discussion. pouring yourself into bed a few hours later and with the last scintilla of sluggish inebriated consciousness you autocratically crank out a farewell cesspool of your curdled children into your belly hair. drying and fossilizing just like the boogers that will soon enough seal your stupid eyes shut only to make you chisel them away and wake up again into the monotonous obscurity of your life."

lol i can understand the whole world right in my room thanks to the internet.
i dont even need to have sex.
So do people just send shitty pics like OPs to send a small message in Snapchat? Like, unless you got a pic, just send a regular message, right? I knew a girl who would snap her reaction to what I said, or what she was saying, when we talked and it just seemed retarded cause I'd just text type her back.
>>9205108
yea. i believe its a result of a normies desire for a snapstreak, when two people snapchat each other for a consecutive amount of days, makes them feel achieved i suppose. wouldnt judge it too much

Go, lovely Rose by Edmund Waller
Go, lovely Rose—
Tell her that wastes her time and me,
That now she knows,
When I resemble her to thee,
How sweet and fair she seems to be.
Tell her that’s young,
And shuns to have her graces spied,
That hadst thou sprung
In deserts where no men abide,
Thou must have uncommended died.
Small is the worth
Of beauty from the light retired:
Bid her come forth,
Suffer herself to be desired,
And not blush so to be admired.
Then die—that she
The common fate of all things rare
May read in thee;
How small a part of time they share
That are so wondrous sweet and fair!
By day she woos me, soft, exceeding fair:
But all night as the moon so changeth she;
Loathsome and foul with hideous leprosy
And subtle serpents gliding in her hair.
By day she woos me to the outer air,
Ripe fruits, sweet flowers, and full satiety:
But through the night, a beast she grins at me,
A very monster void of love and prayer.
By day she stands a lie: by night she stands
In all the naked horror of the truth
With pushing horns and clawed and clutching hands.
Is this a friend indeed; that I should sell
My soul to her, give her my life and youth,
Till my feet, cloven too, take hold on hell?
The World, Christina Rossetti
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great Chieftain o’ the Puddin-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang 's my arm.
The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o’ need,
While thro’ your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.
His knife see Rustic-labour dight,
An’ cut ye up wi’ ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin, rich!
Then, horn for horn, they stretch an’ strive:
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
Bethankit hums.
Is there that owre his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi’ perfect sconner,
Looks down wi’ sneering, scornfu’ view
On sic a dinner?
Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckless as a wither'd rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit;
Thro’ bluidy flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!
But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He'll make it whissle;
An’ legs, an’ arms, an’ heads will sned,
Like taps o' thrissle.
Ye Pow'rs wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o’ fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu’ prayer,
Gie her a Haggis!
Fine selections. This latter must be Burns, although strange to say I'm not familiar with it. I'd post one too, but I am not in the position to do so right now. Great to read while on the job. Homely, humble, quiet, lovely...
