I always listen to audio books too and from work, so I thought I'd try out this one because it was highly rated in the scifi tab. I'm posting here, on this board that I have never used before, to warn you all of what a fucking awful, foul, rancid piece of hot garbage this 80's worshiping, wish fulfilling, smug narrator having, self insderting bullshit I have ever had the displeasure of hearing. I listened to the entire thing, wanting with all my life for it to get better, and that was the worst part, some points in the book are almost cool and interesting, and then the faggy, fat, nerdy, '''''''''hero'''''''', has to go into a 10 minute masturbatory stupor about how fucking cool every band in the 80's was, and I have to fucking sit through Wil fucking Weaton tell me about how cool the fucking Wil Weaton verse inside the virtual reality game is as I sit in traffic on the 405 and wish ever so dearly for the evil internet overlords to bomb the ever living fuck out of the angsty main character, but no. The book drags on and on and on listing off every single hairstyle, food, band, videogame, book, dungeons and dragons set, MOVIE LINE, fucking lattitudes and longitudes of the 80's. Goddam do not read this book, and for the life of you DO NOT GET IT IN AUDIO FORM.

They say consciousness is a gift evolution gave us, something social animals have to help them with the social stuff.

But that doesn't make any sense. From an external perspective, consciousness would simply be the capability to have private thoughts, opinions, and awareness of its own being - Dasein. Yet, that wouldn't give us the consciousness we feel.

Everything alive is simply well organized atoms that are able to store energy to be used later. There is absolutely no way these atoms could create the consciousness we have. As I said, it would simply help socialize. As an example - the chinese room. Consciousness would simply be the capability of thought and interpretation. From the outside, there is no way to tell whether it is alive or if it is just a machine.

So, what is this consciousness we feel, this thing that makes us feel alive? Surely some philosopher should have already written something on this subject

Imagine yourself moving your hand without being conscious of it. You can't, because the presence of "yourself" in an action is what defines you being "conscious" of that action. But does "yourself" actually need to be yourself? This "agent" does not seem to undergo any change, or come from any point in space OR time. The detection of this agent by your brain in an action is what causes your brain to label that action as "conscious". There is no reason why everything in the universe can't possess this agent, as you neither know everything in the universe nor do you know the full scope of the agent.

So sit down and try to focus on that "feeling", so you can see how weak your grasp on it truly is.
>>
>>9215702
Imagine one of these complex contraptions, where you put a single ball in the system and then a lot of things happen. But eventually there is no more energy to be used, so it stops. According to science, our bodies are one of these contraptions, but there is constant input and storage of energy from the outside.

Now, could you make a contraption so complex that it becomes "conscious" of its own self? I doubt it.

How did this fraud hack even get any attention from following philosophers?

"I think therefore I am" except he literally presupposes that the "I" already exists before he claims that the "I" thinks. What a joke
96 posts and 10 images submitted.
>>
>>9215453
It's not a presupposition it's a conclusion, quite a reasonable one too.
The I ought to exist if there has to be something such as thinking. For how could one think at all, or conceive of existing/not existing, if there wasn't an ego against the background of an existence.

Kant dun real goof'd thinking he refuted Descartes.

>>9215453
>attacking one of the most influential philosophers and his most widely-regarded proposition
>not actually reading any of his works

fatal error dude
>>
>>9215464
Just because there seems to exist the condition of "thinking" doesn't mean the "I" which may be the source of the said thinking has to necessarily exist.

Good lord, how did this shit get approved? It's some of the worst fan-fiction I've ever read and somehow it's been made into a huge stage production and published. And to make matters worse, I have to go and see the damn play with my Potter-obsessed girlfriend.
At least the movie with the autist and his suitcase had cool monsters and Colin Ferrell...

She doesn't like it, she fucking LOVES it. She was like 7 when Pottermania took off, and that shit lasted for so long that it's just ingrained in her DNA. We live very close to Universal Studios LA so we've been to there about 25 times(in the 13 months we've been dating) just to go to the Harry Potter section of the park. And we took a trip to Orlando to visit the larger Harry Potter world at Universal Orlando. And next month we're going to London for Cursed Child, the studio tour of the Harry Potter movies, and shop they have at King's Cross Station. And she's already talking about a trip to Japan to visit Universal Tokyo for the Harry Potter world there. Oh, and her apartment is Gryffindor themed.
It's too much.

Yes. And the rate of them per capita in my neck of the woods is very, very high. Wish I was at one now, in fact. When homes are no more, there will hopefully still be good used book stores. *sigh* your friend, the ghost.

Worth a read. I could grossly oversimplify it though.

>Have a central point or theme
>Have characters that seem whole and have values
>Ensure the piece you are writing is driven by your theme and the values of your characters
>Deviate from this only when you know what you're doing

African literature has a reputation for being dark, gritty, realistic portrayals of colonialism/post-colonialism.

What are some African comedies (like Xala) or fantasy (like Wizard of the Crow) or anything else that breaks away from what African literature is normally like?
