>we must overcome nihilism
No, "we" don't even know of this nihilism you speak of. We are men. Whatever that makes you.
>muh existential crisis
No. Stop trying to sound philosophical. You have no direction in life. Get a job

>No, "we" don't even know of this nihilism you speak of.
We do.

Damn, you're alpha
>>9217469
No "we" don't. Your little clique of betabois does.
What are some good youtube book reviewers? Looking for not much known ones as they tend to create better content. Also, what is your opinion on Freud's Dostoyevsky and Parricide? Just got it from the library and have started reading it.
Mementomori is the only legit youtuber

cliff and bookchemist are dogshit in comparison
>>9217788
Looking at mementomori and bookchemist, Betterthanfood reviews is better in my opinion, straight to the point. No What am i reading series or hashtag book challenges just straight up his thoughts on a particular book. Clean, simple, good video quality.
>>9218401
despite all that booktag nonsense mementomori has nuanced tastes in lit and unlike cliff doesn't play such a pseud onscreen persona. not to mention cliff's commentary falls flat every time.
What makes a good poem? I know it's a dumb question, but I am ignorant of poetry. I studied it a bit at college and university, but the why of why is a poem good still escapes me. The best my poetry lecturers have mustered are vague musings about the subject. Are there no concrete standards in poetry? Please help me to understand. I would like to write a good poem one day.
At least in my mind, good poetry is like good music. There's the pop brand that runs with the mass social paradigms, and then the obscure cutting edge artists that strive to sharpen or redefine a genre.
I feel as if it's similar to poetry. A mental schema influenced by the thoughts of the current or slight past zeitgeist would yeild subpar poetry when compared to poetry that strives to capture a moment/beauty by different strokes.
If anyone can help me understand better, by all means do so.

Fuck. Now what?
Nothing matters. Who cares? Reading is nice.

how to force yourself to read? i've got some interesting books that i like and. imagine myself reading them, but somehow i don't have the will to do so. you know when people actually find something interesting they read it despite being football players or. something in that category.
thanks
>>9217324
If you don't find reading fun, why do it?
>>9217341
because i have some books that find interesting.
>>9217449
If you find them interesting, why not read them?
Anyone sad they were born too late to be a polymath? We live now in the era of specialists. I'm coming to the end of my PhD studies and I have realised two things:
-I am an expert in my tiny slice of knowledge (A specific class of solutions to a specific class of non-linear PDEs)
-My breadth of knowledge hasn't really increased inthe past few years.
I don't know, I just wish I could do some maths, do some physics, do some philosophy, live in one of the great buildings in Oxford or Cambridge, go to daily prayers, have great feasts and debate with other great minds with wide interests and knowledge.
Just thinking about Newton. His Theology and Philosophy was mostly shit, but his Maths and Physics was great, he was also an MP at times, working for the government. Just imagining that life.
But no, I am a specialist. Such is modern society.
There are plenty of polymaths, it's not that you can't be one, you're just dumb and that's okay sweetie.
How would I know this?
>published in biomolecular engineering, solid state inorganic chemistry, and international relations and foreign policy
>>9217306
It is incredibly easy to become a polymath. Just study one thing in university and study another thing on the side (instead of shitposting).
>>9217323
I was inspired by newton in college so I majored in Physics and studied philosophy as well. A lot of interesting crossover and it wasn't particularly difficult to publish in both fields.
You are on a foreign island. You’re the first one who sets his foot now on this island for centuries. It’s overgrown with jungle butterflies, strange birds singing. You’re walking through the jungle and come across a gigantic cliff. Upon closer inspection this giant cliff is made of pure emerald. And a holy monk hundreds of years ago spent all his life with a chisel and hammer to scratch a poem into the wall. It’s hard like diamond so it took his entire life to write three lines of a poem. I said please open your eyes, you’ll be the first to see it, and I’d like you to read it to me.

Why is it though even though 98% of the atoms in our bodies are constantly replaced year after year, our consciousness doesn't get replaced along with it?
Does this imply the soul exists?
Continuity.
Replace 1 brick a day in your house and after 10 years it's still the same house. Your mind doesnt know when 1 atom of a chemical in your brain is replaced with another identical atom, because nothing else would be altered.
>>9217046
>your personality and mental state are the same as 5 years ago
Cool premise bro
>>9217056
That must mean that the house has a property that is not connected to any of its constituent parts
Anon, are you saying the house has a soul?
Prove him wrong. Pro-tip: You can't.
He's not getting laid. Evolution proved him wrong.

Can I jump into the Phenomenology or should I read something else by him first?
>>9216966
read this instead, it's shorter
>>9216973
Science of Logic is based off of Phenomenology..
Read something simple before reading something terribly difficult.
That's a far better advise than "read the first work first".
What if Homer was a woman?
That would be odd
Είμαι γυναίkα, μ 'αkούς βρυχηθμό,
σε αριθμούς πολύ μεγάλο για να αγνοήσει.
Και ξέρω πάρα πολύ να πάω πίσω kαι να υποkρινόμαστε.
Turns out she wasn't that different from her male counterpart
Most historians agree Homer was probably a black trans woman.
What u think of this poem i done wrote?
Stunning highway madness from my elbows to my spine.
The aristocrats, they asked me if I’m having a good time,
But they all still slithered through their muddy cathedral doors
On the night of our first meeting in the showers of July.
Can you hear the humble men made from rocks cracked down by time?
Or crooked toothless grins brought on by birdsong in the sky?
It’s sad that you still carry the burden that you were born
I left it long ago in the murky mess of time.
Stop now all your singing,
Your pathetic celebration
Stop the parties in the dark
With trumpets, dimly playing
You cannot trace your bony fingers down the avenue.
If there was a God, I’m sure that he would never talk to you,
So why do you persist that he told you that your fate
Was to cut off both my ears and then tell me I’m okay?
>>9216887
Embarrassing, I can imagine you picturing cutscenes from a video game while writing this
>>9216904
Ya I was imagining the cutscenes from Angry Birds u got me
Since the QTDDTOT threadgot deleted, and since I'm seeing a big influx of threads around a specific subject, I'll go ahead and make one myself.
For those people who've read Goethe, have you read him in the original or in translation? Have you read both? Do you recommend a specific translation/copy/edition? Other anons have posted before that part of what makes Goethe so great is his language and that, like Shakespeare, a translation seriously inhibits an appreciation for his poetry.
>>9216880
The Norton definitely has the most cultural currency since it's the undergrad's best friend when it comes to a solid foundation of scholarly supplements, but I've heard the translation's not all that great.
>>9216880
Several anons (I believe, unless they're all the same guy) have recommended the Luke translation in the Oxford World's Classics edition. They didn't say why, but at least it's a recc.
