Any lawfags in here? I've been thinking about law school for the past month now and now I'm at the point where I am seriously considering it. Should I do it?
>>9270083
yea, if you like being a bartista with 150k in debt then go ahead.
It's perhaps one of the single worst choices any person could make right now.
It's on par with saying you want to be a famous novelist. It's.. possible, but it's gonna be a long time before it stops being a gruelling nightmare, and even then it's like a 0.001% chance of success.
Don't listen to these guys.
Market's iffy, but if you know people that are well situated you'll have no problem landing a job. Look for schools in areas in which you can imagine yourself putting down roots. If nothing else, the state ALWAYS needs public defenders. Pay is mediocre compared to your debt obligations, but if you live modestly for a few years or of school you should be clear and then living a comfortable middle-class life.
Are any other Dune books worth a read? Books like Sisters of Dune, Heretics of Dune, etc.
>>9270037
The 5 by Frank are the only ones
>>9270037
I was able to read the second one, Messiah, but the 3rd one already was unbearably boring.
First 3 AT MOST is all I can really suggest.
4 if you're really into it.
You'd be fine with just reading the first two, though.
Dune and Dune Messsiah are the best imo.
I want to be the greatest philosopher of my generation. The Connor McGregor of philosophy, so to speak. How do I start to accomplish this goal? Namely, how do I go about getting my genius recognized? Should I write a book?
Haven't you gotten the news?
Philosophy is dead.
Wittgenstein killed it over 70 years ago.
Suck my hyperdick
>>9269502
Compared to me, Wittgenstein is a child.
Whats the best book you've read which takes place mainly in London?
The Twelve Inch Problem of Jerome.
Book of dave by will self
Some of it is set in a post apocalyptic London, but the parts set in present day London are excellent. The geography, topography, vernacular, atmosphere, culture, social history, mindset etc are all fantastically observed and written about.
London from a taxi driver's POV

I see this book everywhere I go, as though it's calling for me to read it.
Has anyone here read anything by Ryū Murakami?
Is he better than Haruki Murakami?
>>9269102
are they related? i started the japanese lit thread, and this looks good to me
sounds like weeaboo fanfic
>>9269147
No, they are not. Though I think it's a shame for Ryū, because he is under the shadow of the more popular Murakami if only because the other Murakami is more popular.
Hey /lit/ I just made this chart, what do you think? anything missing?
(all of this is from the 20s tho -except Dario-, that's why Sor Juana and Machado aren't there)
Also latinoamerican lit general.

/lit/,
I have a theory that a wide spread lack of logical, rational thinking is responsible for nearly every wrong thing on earth.
With that in mind, can you recommend me some philosophy/ general critical thinking literature?
"What is Enlightenment?" by Kant
>>9267829
that theory is held be practically every redditor
No, it is foolish to deny that we are capable of or even should deny emotion in our decision. The issue is the postmodern/progressive push to declare emotion more important than logical thinking, and that emotion is where all focus should go
Share your edgiest, most contrarian literary opinions
pynchon and dfw are complete hacksim a pretty conventional guy
Literature is not that important.
If I could do it all over again I would have started with the Greeks.
Haiku thread 2
We had some fun last time.
Same thing, post your own haikus, or write them right now, or post haikus that you like (Basho, Buson, Issa, Shiki?) and comment them.
Once again, your own haiku doesn’t have to be extremely well-made and rule-following, but try to do your best.
>>9267618
I have wrote some other small poems, lame-haikus.
Once again I used 3 verses of 10 poetic syllables. The originals are in Portuguese. I will post the translations followed by the originals.
Young prostitute girl, the night and the skies are cold,
But the dew that embraces you: is it more cold
Than the warm loneliness of a strange bed?
The tolling of the bells of twilight
Has the scent of the autumnal woods.
The sun withers and falls; it is time to sleep.
Frogs croak in the swamps on night, far away,
And yet I sleep. Hatred, famine and war thunder
In the world, it is day and there is sun, but I…well, I sleep.
Silverfishes gnaw books, they do not read them: sages
Preach for the vacuum inside their entrails.
Have I the guts of Silverfishes for a brain?
The originals:
White winter -
Frost and tangerines.
Another day

What's the best order to read Plato?
Start with the Greeks.
>>9266291
Just read Plato in the standard order. From left to right.
P-L-A-T-O
>>9266291
Start with Euthyphro.
What's the recommended reading order for the /lit/ books on Buddhism?
Being as it's Buddhism, I'm gonna hazard that the reading order is not rigid.
Senpai humanity's only serious religions are judaism+kaballah, christianity as a whole and hinduism.

Any romance fantasy novels with a girl protag?
>>9260976
well, I was going to recommend daggerspell by katherine kerr, but I honestly can't remember if it has a female protag, although I think so, but either way I enjoyed it.

A lot of authors that /lit/ loves, like Joyce and Kafka, are heralded for their advanced emotional intelligence, which is one of the many factors that allowed them to write such fulfilling literature. But I don't think there's many threads that discuss what that is, how it enhances literature, and how to foster it to improve literary appreciation.
What are some good books on the basics of emotional intelligence? i.e., something to get started on the foundations, identifying emotions, and practical exercises. What are some clear, universal examples of where an author's emotional depth shines through? Is my lack of emotional intelligence why I can't stop reading Ludwig Wittgenstein but I can't start reading James Joyce?
henry james is pretty high on the ei I think

Stop consuming mass media. Movies, television, news, and popular music are all designed to make you malleable and unintelligent.
>>9249438
I can tell you in one sentence what those books will tell you in too many pages--You've got to be honest with yourself.
