What was special about Dante that entitled him to visit hell?
He wrote the divine comedy
>Dante's life's work is fanfiction of him meeting his favorite historical figures

Where the fuck do I start with the Warhammer 40k novels?
Idk...not literature
>>9320677
It is literature though
A reasonable starter kit would be the Iliad, the Bible, Paradife Loft, and the Divine Comedy. Arguably Le Morte D'Arthur and Beowulf would also help your appreciation.
Show me your best guys. I'll start:
I pulled on a hat,
Because a blizzard was in my head.
I glanced out the window,
But still felt only dread.
When the blinds had become useless,
I uncapped a vial of germs.
And when they had overcome me,
I observed the clock’s sojourn.
During time’s standstill,
I’d become feverish with glee.
I opened wide my chest and pantry,
And even offered her some tea.
An establishment within moments,
She often hindered my breath.
My bed had gotten smaller,
So I hoped it remain until my death.
Fickle were these germs, I noted,
But the clock showed nothing ensuing.
My skin itched wherever not infected,
Writhing when this I’d foresee as my very undoing.
I mustn’t have been a good host,
For I was now feeling healthy.
She borrowed life from me no longer,
Leading me to believe: in health, happiness is stealthy.
Samatha:
Chasing sunset’s last embrace
I paddled hard to cleave the sea
Your heart was of Eastern rays
You were never meant for me
>Don't fall in love guys, its a meme
Submit a request ask if I may
Ponder what I'm about to say
What is truth but what you believe?
The question I ask tends to deceive
Wander through dreamland aimlessly
Purposeless is your path to be
Blinded by veils, weighed down by chains
Unknowing god of your domain.
Take it all in unquestioning
Care not what truth blasphemy brings
Knowing inside you have no name
Turbulent thinking it does tame
A pitcher of reason does convince
sip; think that god does not exist.
Finish the drink and you will see
He's not where you thought him to be.
Behind the curtain does he lie
To cross the curtain you must die
Lifting the curtain brings to view
The stage where it rests was built by you
Be it not oak or willow tree
Metaphor forgoes clarity
Ponder once more what I may mean
When I profess that life's a dream
every moment a round marble
expanding or contracting in size and clarity
in proportion to a sense of wonder
which I occasionally recall
through a long forgotten smell
gleaming letters on a book spine
sunlit luminescence of page corners
echo of a soft voice in empty stairwell
shadow of swaying branches on the wall
electrified fingertips on sympathetic fabric
the sudden voice of a crow breaking a nostalgic reverie
paths trod in decade old dreams brought into focus at the edge of a pier
the candle flame's tiny window into the sun
unexpected approximations of eden dancing just beyond our daily periphery
coaxing each other to appear amid our confusion, giggling at the seams
>tfw learning German
The amount of authors I'll be able to read in the original in time.
Holy..... I want more.....
Why do you think your German would ever reach a point that its a benefit to you to read it in the original language over a professional translation?
I know japanese, German, Spanish, Norwegian, and English, and I still don't think translations are all too bad.
Not to say japanese is beautifully written (I'm a lit weab)
My Norwegian sucks though. I don't know what to read

How do we reconcile the Flynn effect of rising IQ with each generation with the fact that Plato is the most intelligent man to have ever existed? After 2000+ years of Flynn at work SOMEONE should have surpassed him, right? But if we look around and then back to Plato, his supremacy is crystal clear. How does he do it?
>>9320065
The Flynn effect is evidence that IQ is not the best indicator of intelligence.
So the most intelligent and talented person alive right now must be a philosopher?
Nice thread, OP
Why are *nglos so bad at literature?
>greatest philosopher was actually Scottish
>greatest English writer wasn't even British, was an Irish Catholic
>token faggot and greatest playwright was half-Irish and hated Br*tish society
>greatest female writer is J.K. Rowling
>Rutlandbaconsouthamptonshakespeare wasn't even a good Englishman since he was a Catholic
Explain yourself perfidious albion.
br*tcucks, not even once
The Anglos are literally goot at nothing

Learn to spell, retard.
A lot of people here seem to be what I would call pragmatic Christians.
That is, they were not brought up in the religion. Instead they've found religion through studying and theory, and have decided that it has practical application as to how to lead a good, moral life.
I'm just curious as to how you guys got there, what your motivation was, and whether you could recommend any literature to an atheist at a kind of moral crossroads.
I'm also welcome to suggestions of good moral atheistic literature.
I was raised evangelical and but then fucked off because >lel proddies
Right now I don't quite fit into any church but I'm thinking of either catholic or orthodox, I don't particularly like much of the doctrine surrounding the papacy, especially ex cathedra infallibility and the temporal power he has
>>9319867
Revelation. You read the Bible and it's just manifestly superior to non-inspired literature.
Marriage is a useful social construct, this is why I am personally tempted to return to the church. I find it difficult to imagine loving another human being without an adequate social contract. I feel like without those rigid structures there's nothing stopping me or my potential partner from fucking around, abandoning the child and emotionally abusing eachother. There has to be a consensus on how both parties are to act within a relationship. I know a lot of that comes from common sense and learned behaviour but it's nice to have foundations that stop us from being hyper self-aware all the time(might be bullshutting here, not sure if that makes sense)
Anyway I have a suspicion that the true reason most people consider "pragmatic christianity" or organised religion in general is the sexual morality. I think refusing to murder people and respecting property rigths is common sense, but interacting with the opposite sex is a fucking mind field. I'm pretty sure most people are relying on Disney movies and TV shows at this point.

there are some Love Live! fanfictions that brought me to the brink of suicide
Will reading this give me wisdom?
>>9319769
No. In writing these works, the authors intended for you to gather nothing but a sense of time wasted from reading them

Replace St Augustclowne with Anon'S My Diary Desu and you're ready to go.
>>9319784
hello mr. alt-woke, why are you so mad about the diary meme all of a sudden?
what are your thoughts on audiobooks?
my friend say she was reading george orwell 1984 when she was actually listening to the audiobook.... does that still count as reading?
do audiobooks provide the same mental stimulation and intellectual benefits?
what are your thoughts :)
>>9319574
Yes.
i too, wonder this.
>>9319574
eyes-ears-mind
ears-mind
One is more engaging and takes more focus. But audiobooks don't detract from the story being told, and I'd say theres an intellectual difference between reading and listening, although listening can free the mind to focus on the story.
Audiobooks should not be a replacement for reading, but they both give different benefits.
btw op is cute
>tfw literary genius of epic proportions but I don't want to spend my time writing all day.
What do, /lit/? Should I go actually live my life, or should I spend my time just making the next literary masterpiece?

OP: Memoirs of a Faggot
I don't understand the point of these "philosophers" that ramble on and on about shit in multiple tomes of books, when their entire philosophy can be distilled into one paragraph.
Seriously, can someone explain to me why this shit is even relevant when you can just read the wiki article and get the gist of it? It's like someone writing 600 pages on why water is wet, sure, it might be interesting to autists, but a normal human being just intuitively knows it in the first place.
I've never read anything that wasn't already self-evident to me. Am I just too intelligent for philosophy?
>>9319404
Philosophers deal more with the 'why' and not with the 'what'.
Yes, pasta man, you've become Clear.
See you at the sanctuary.
