which writers were anti-dancing?
>>9332600
dance music is cool desu
but if i had to guess, the russians. dostoevsky probably wouldn't like edm
>>9332600
any baptists
>>9332600
Adorno hated jazz, so I'd have to imagine he hated dancing too
looking to get into some of his works after watching some video interviews and being very impressed with his wit. where should i start?

Yeah I mean if homosexual orgies are your thing have at it

was more interested in the historical stuff but i mean hey the greeks and romans did it so it must be /lit/ amirite
burr was fucking amazing., lincoln paled in comparison imo but lincoln is more recognized and over rated imo.
only two books i read by him, but burr is fucking a brilliant book.
havent read any of his other stuff... good writer though. his insight into american politics is really enlightening imo.
he's of a long lineage of american politicians and of the aristocracy. im sure he's heard a lot of gossip and rumors about some of our leaders we may view as myth
read burr though. its one of the best books ive ever read.
So I know figuratively nothing about the Roman Empire or any of these emperors that I'm sure pic related slots into somewhere- what are some good pics for learning about it kinda in chronological order, at a just above 'general reader' level of difficulty
>>9332455
obviously meant books not pics
"SPQR" by Mary Beard and "Pax Roma" by Adrian Goldsworthy will do you good and give you a great introduction to the background and institutions from the early founding of Rome to the mid-unified Imperial Empire.
For primary sources after reading those, here's my recommended reading:
Livy Ab Urbe Condita Books 1 - 10, 21-45
Polybius: Histories
Cicero: The Republic, Laws, Defense Speeches, Political Speeches
Sallust: Catiline's Conspiracy, the Jugurthine War, Histories
Caesar: the Gallic War, Civil War
Appian: Civil Wars
Suetonius: The Twelve Caesars
Tacitus: Annals, Agricola and Germany
Josephus: The Jewish War
Plutarch: Greek and Roman Lives
Anon: Lives of the later Caesar
Ammianus Marcellinus: the Later Roman Empire

Long time /fit/izen here
This board merger got me thinking, maybe some gains in the intellect department wouldnt be a bad idea considering I havent read a book in years
As advised by those from /lit/ I'm starting with the Greeks on my path to become a superhuman
we all gonna make it brehs
>pic related
Also tips on how I should go through reading these books? They do not seem like your average fiction doze-off-while-reading type of books.
no. we're not "all gonna make it". you started too late and have wasted your time picking up heavy things. go back to your cavern of ignominy. reading isn't about gainz. this isn't a hugbox for idiots. it's a haven for ridicule and hatred.
You should familiarize yourself, at least briefly, which Greek god's and cultures so you're not frustrated reading the Iliad. And seeing you got the Fagles translation for it, it shouldn't be bad, though you will undoubtedly notice the shift in writing in the Odyssey. Start with the Iliad at any rate.
And you may surprise yourself. Well-written poetry keeps your attention a lot better than prose does. Just sit yourself down for an hour or two every day and try not to overdo it. Don't listen to music or anything like that, but maybe have something to drink nearby
>>9332393
Read the Odyssey first, it's the better one. Think of the movie 300 and all the fit warrior types with rippled muscles, and that's Ulysses.
>he doesn't read biographies of his favorite writers
>>9332384
>wants to read the author go on about his life instead of cool stories
im sorry anon, but that's just boring
>>9332391
Biography, not autobiography
>>9332395
>wants to read about what other people have to say about [author] rather than his works himself
im sorry anon, but that's just boring
I am the perpetual observer.
I cannot transmit.
All who are hailed for observation.
are better transmission analyzers.
they're really just glorified transmitters.
I can't tell you anything,
because i'm just a Receiver.
I am The Receiver.
I'm not an amplifier.
I couldn't be a radio.
Radios are just translators.
I know this won't convey anything, I'm just an antenna.

analog TV, next
>>9332385
what do you mean
>>9332444
i haven't read 1q84. i guess i didn't convey anything that you could really understand. i knew i was just an observer.
Hey I'm new here. What is /lit/'s preferred citation style?
>>9332357
citation is a spook
>>9333120
got a source for that?
>>9332357
Footnote citations boi.
Why is it that the characters in Kafka's stories never seem to actually question the situations they're in? Why are they always helpless, desperate, or compliant rather than angry or defiant?
>>9332317
Have you read The Castle?
You'd need to read Kafka's biography son.
>>9332325
I'm on chapter 6.
I've read The Judgement, The Trial, The Metamorphosis, and his letter to his father.
Would you rather read erotica written in first person or third person? Pic unrelated.
>>9332254
first
third
third person, gives me plausible deniability. "I don't fantasize about being turned into a girl myself, I just think it's hot when it happens to other people."
just kidding literally kill me.
You literally can't argue this.
Prove me wrong.

What are some good finance books?
>>9332154
If you can get a hold of a copy, Margin of Safety by Seth Klarman.
But you might want to ask /biz/ instead of /lit/.
You'll probably get better answers on /biz/ but I think pic related (Michael Lewis) is a very good place to start. Liar's poker is really good.

I just finished reading Yukio Mishima's 'Sun and Steel' because of the /fitlit/ exchange. While I am waiting for recommends, I'll see if I can find some good scholarly articles on it.
In the meantime, what are other essays, books, or fictions, which extol the physical, and/or try to collapse Platonic dualism (which doesn't actually exist within Plato; see Plotinus re: emanation).
Literature which would also get me into the mood for working out, or dragging myself for physical discipline would also be acceptable to recommend.
Thank you in advance.
>>9332079
Don't be a mental curlbro, read literature about other stuff. Maybe read another book from Mishima if you liked him.
>>9332079
>Steppenwolf - Hesse
>Fathers and Sons - Turgenev
>The Iliad
Im feeling like a funky monkey

No offense, but this seems like a typical christian nutjob who is making witches just so he can hunt them. It's not that a Christian can't grasp the state of ideology in America, but this dude seems blinded by his own brand of witchhunting.

When exactly did American literature ascend to its modern day status as the most influential, entertaining, innovative and rewarding national literature on the planet?
I think it was probably after WWII, but there were portents of its coming dominance over European literature during the interwar period.

>its modern day status as the most influential, entertaining, innovative and rewarding national literature on the planet?

How do I get into Ludwig Wittgenstein? I'm planning on going right into Philosophical Investigations but i'm not sure its the right thing to do.
Well, I flat out would not recommend starting out with Tractatus.
Maybe look into On Certainty as a starting point, and if you like what you see there move onto PI?
PV is probably the easiest philosophy book known to man, just go for it.
Someone give me a quick rundown
