tell me about yourself and why you come to /lit/
I come here because I'm bored and have no other opportunity for social contact.
And sometimes people recommend books.

Books are the only remote intellectual hobby in my life and are all i'm good at.
Why DON'T you torrent your books?
I don't have to.
I only read what's in the public domain
I like to take the physical copies of books and read them in public so I look smart.

hesse was a faggot
What are you currently writing, anon?
not writing anything. planning an epic, but it's much more fun to plan than it is to write. probably won't ever set any of it down, so you won't see Jade re-enact "wake up brother.swf" with Timon.
My MA thesis. It's almost finished. Then I'll be translating plays into English for friends of mine while I look for a job.
The next Ulysses, going really well so far

What makes you think you're not going to have to embrace both the divine and the nihilistic as a journey of suffering and enlightenment?
>>9347408
>there is no moral basis without God
Go into this more. Do you mean there can be no definitive ground for the basis of a Universal Morality without God?
>>9347459
Yes. I thought that was fairly obvious
>“Those who love life do not read. Nor do they go to the movies, actually. No matter what might be said, access to the artistic universe is more or less entirely the preserve of those who are a little fed up with the world.”
>“An entire life spent reading would have fulfilled my every desire; I already knew that at the age of seven. The texture of the world is painful, inadequate; unalterable, or so it seems to me. Really, I believe that an entire life spent reading would have suited me best. Such a life has not been granted me...”

How exactly do you cunts rationalize hating rupi kapur but idolizing this dogshit excuse for a """""poet""""
is it because he's a white man?
>>9346591
Dude, virtually no one on this board idolizes Bukowski except for the stray filthy casual that confuses /lit/ with r/books.
Any thread with Bukowski will get replies about how he's a cheap rip-off of Henry Miller or Celine.
I like his prose works, not his poems.
>>9346591
Bukowski is shit. Some of his prose might be somewhat funny and relatable to some of us, but it could have been written by any average failed schoolshooter.
so I've been wanting to get into this for a while now and now think I might be ready. But before I begin I want to know if there is anything I should read beforehand.
I have an ok knowledge of the Bible, read C&P, and Notes but haven't read any earlier Russian Lit. Anything more I should read that's necessary to get the full experience?
Thanks

Its arguably the best book ever writtren.smerkavov killed the old man
Depends where you're from and how familiar you are with Slavic culture and political circumstances of Eastern Europe of 19th century. If you're not you might be slightly confused at times, but internet serves as a brilliant and quick reference guidebook to learn about specific customs or habits. Other than that at least basic understanding of Catholic and Orthodox theology and hierarchical structure of those churches would help. Westerners might also miss out on some thinly veiled humor Dostoyevsky inserts between the lines, but it's a detail more than anything.
I've literally read this book as my first serious, classical literature novel at the age of 17 and it has blown me away so extensive literary knowledge isn't necessary. Stunning emotional and aesthetic experience. I still come back to it every now and then and each time I revel in Dostoyevsky's genius.

Best epub/pdf reader to read on PC ?
Also any general tips ? close the curtains / dim the lights ..
I already use flux but i have no reader to use.
>>9345725
Print out each page
>he doesn't even print his own books
What has /lit/ become?
Reading epub in a screen is a fucking mess dude.
Best PDF? Evince
Best epub/mobi? Hard question. I will say Kindle for pc, but I don't recommend using it.
i use sumatra for pdfs and the firefox epub reader for epubs
and idk, i used a laptop with an opaque screen thinking that made a difference, but recently changed it and i dont feel any difference.
just light the place as much as you can, naturally if possible.
>tfw so used to if that i cant read on paper anymore
>tfw buy a book, scan it, and read it on screen
is democracy and equality and egalitarianism ruining literature and art
is it
not just art
>>9345685
Democracy ruins literally everything. There is not a single decision that is made best in a democratic process.

>hey guys, where should we go out to eat tonight?
Has the intelligentsia of today moved to youtube? I have watched some videos by sargon of akkad, and it seems to me that he and people like him are carrying the torch of reason through our crumbling modern age. I do take Sargon as a man of letters, watching his videos it's quite obvious.
He has a very regal beard. Socratic like as well. Is Sargon a philosopher king?
>>9344467
Yes. Sargon is a walking, talking encyclopedia. He's like Chomsky except smarter and more eloquent. This may sound like a bold claim, but I expect people will still be talking about him two hundred years from now.
lol. sargon is one of the most ill-read people I've ever heard. he routinely mixes philosophical concepts, has a tenuous grip on history, and argues from circular logic. if that is the example of intelligentsia then I fear for the future of mankind.
I read Junkie by William Burroughs recently and I liked it. Naked Lunch wasn't as interesting for me.
Recommend me some books about drugs, /lit/.
Biographies about people who were addicted to drugs count too.
The classic, Confessions of an English Opium-Eater. Coincidentally, mine has one of the ugliest covers I've ever seen.

is that any good? what's it about? I keep seeing it in mybook store
Hallo /lit/
I posted a thread last year about my decision to spend a year in the rural cabin that my family inherited from my grandparents in Haugesund, Norway.
I posted a few threads since then detailing my lifestyle and my attempts to write and so on.
And now (finally!) I can let you guys know that my book is due to be published in Autumn 2017 under the title "In The Midst Of Some Grey City" (translated).
Any question you guys have?
Hey OP!
Sounds interesting, can you give us a summary of the story please?
>>9343863
Did you translate it yourself?
Did you self publish?
Does it have anything sexual in it?
>>9343863
What's that title in Norwegian?
