Watching paint dry. He was literally watching paint dry.
The window was wide open, and the nurse had brought in a fan to help circulate the air, but the smell was still nauseously overpowering. Difficult to explain if you have never smelled wet paint before, but easy enough to understand the headache if you have.
He hadn't expected to wake up in a hospitable room in the middle of the night, but it was a bit hard to keep your eyes shut and your brain in a fog when the lady in the bed next to you decides to get up and slam her head into the wall so hard it leaves a large hole.

I've started reading Roberto Bolano's 2666 and I'm only about 10% into it, but up to now it's pretty much about the wacky life of book critics wanting to have threesomes but fucking (or psychoanalyzing) hookers instead and beating the occasional Pakistani. All that with a lot of real and fake name dropping. Yeah, I'm starting to see why so many critics liked it, but honestly I am a little bit underwhelmed after hearing so much that it is some kind of surrealistic masterpiece. Bolano can weave a nice tapestry and all, but is this pretty much it for a thousand plus pages? I am probably still going to finish it because I have trouble leaving books unfinished, but even though there is no traditional linear plot and it's more like five books mashed together, does it ever picks up?

I tried reading this crumby book, and all. Boy, is the prose stilted and annoying. Salinger really likes to shoot the bull, you know? I couldn't even finish it, I admit.
Anyone who says this belongs among the classics is just being a phony, if you really want to know the truth.

The one about the kid who gets hit in the head by a baseball and goes crazy was hands down the best. The one about the yeti was the worst because the chapter cliffhanger were the narrator freaks out over being "stabbed" with a popsicle made me quit reading the series.
