I don't get it. *This* is where the "white privilege" concept came from? It's hard to take the people who espouse these concepts seriously when said concepts came from such superficial analyses.

I have finished writing my own polemic, I have just finished all 5 pages, would someone like to read it and say if it's good or not?

I'll read it, and in addition to just giving a judgment, I will explain that judgment. :)

> Sipping on a glass of boxed wine and rolling a spliff around in his fingers, Harold Roubleberg prepares himself for Crenshaw University's second annual Culturefest by getting, in his own words, "Completely fucked up." Looking around the dorm room, sees Justin Jams, Albert Beckett, and Mark Hoffeltroff - best friends for the past year and half of school, all transferred in as Juniors to be part of Crenshaw's first graduating class, see themselves at the forefront of a-um-uh, a Cultural Revolution!
> "Crenshaw University. . . committed to refurbishing -er waz it remodeling?- young people into global citizens." Mission statement of the school, Harold thinks about components of the speech he is going to give at commencement next month, televised; he had given the best impromptu speech at a tryout just three weeks- hold on, mission statement, speech- Yes! Yessir! He was going to be Crenshaw's first commencement speaker, a-and his speech was going to be televised! Crenshaw had only opened two years ago after making enough money from a crowd-funding effort aimed at reforming higher education in United America, new name comes from a rebranding effort, and the passage of the 28th Amendment, repealing and replacing the 10th. It read something like- Harold! - ??

I thought it was more ironic than sad. The characterization of the main character is fucking phenomenal though, he is somewhat sympathetic but we still get a sense of how static he is, and his "intellectual" stasis causing the woman's death. It's really something I know a lot of people have seen but few have been able to express.

Does anyone know of a good collection of John Locke?

I'd like something as complete as possible.

Thanks.

You don't need a collection. You only need to read his Essay Concerning Human Understanding (which is long) and his two Treatsies. You can also read his Letter Concerning Toleration if you want. But that's everything.

I grew up listening to bands like DDT, and I liked their sound as somewhere between Western rock and folk music. But apparently, Russian music is known for its poetic lyricism, and DDT is especially accomplished as a popular rock band. Reading the Google translations makes me want to learn Russian so I can appreciate the music more. Are Russian rock bands the poets of the modern era?

Hey /lit/

I have started writing my own sci-fi story, I have just finished chapter 1, would someone like to read it and say if it's good or not?

>>
>>9385863
No. Too early. Finish a first draft. I can tell you if you have a good opening or not, but not a good story, and you'll be revising the first chapter after you finish the rough draft anyway, I hope. You'd be better off just posting the logline so I can judge the premise, protagonist, and title.
>>
Post the first paragraph, we'll see from there if my incredibly precious time could be alloted further
>>
>>9385890

Ok I understand.

I can post the first chapter(about 900 words) and then what I had in mind for the rest, I dont know with a "first draft" is(not native english speaker please forgive), because the first chapter is just an epilogue or rather little background to the main story, the first chapter takes place 20 years before second chapter if you understand.

i am a jobless literature student though, so all day
2 hours a day minimum. if i have a lot of reading to do for uni i might read for 5 hours.
just no distractions. i used to be really good at blocking out background noise, but lately i always focus on background conversations to frustrate myself. annoying cycle where it keeps getting worse.

can you show me the best articles, youtube videos etc. that gives you advices how to write fiction, especially how to develop talent. i know it sounds cliché, but i dont have too much time to figure out how to start. many thanks i appreciate literally every answer

There's no proper way to write, is the thing. Some writers take ages to properly structure out their stories ahead of time, others just start putting shit on the paper and worry about the fine details later. Find what feels natural for you, if you're a massive autist, there's no shame in taking a ton of time to just plan things meticulously. Aside from that, here's some things you should do when writing..

Characters: Make up a character backstory for them, even if it won't be in the finished product. Giving every character an origin will help you make sure that they're consistent and "human."

Whenever a character does something, ask yourself, "Would they really do this? Is there a more practical way they'd go about it? Is this realistically in their capabilities?"

When a character says something, ask yourself, "is this how people talk? If I were talking to this person, would I be interested in what they're saying?" Avoid as much drivel as possible, of course, some characters can be written to be boring or understated. Know what your tone is, and what's effective.

Whenever something happens in the plot, ask yourself, "Why did this happen? Why wouldn't this happen? Does this contradict anything I've said before?"

Work from there. Consistency really is the key in my opinion.

What does the 'why' have to do with it? Either you enjoy Wallace's stylistic choices or you don't.
>>
>>9385633
He felt it made him look smarter, which was extremely important to him because he was deeply insecure about his intelligence. He lied to others about his SAT scores, got into Amherst through his father rather than any academic ability, spent pages and pages on superfluous and often incorrect mathematical and chemical detail in his failed attempt at a novel, Infinite Jest, flunked out of grad school, and spent an enormous amount of time trying to convince himself he was smart. Eventually he killed himself because deep down he knew he was a pretentious fraud and not the genius he sold himself as.
>>
>>9385633
think of it as a "saturation" of the text, the details have a realism that becomes almost insistant in that postmoderny way and the stories seem to chase their own implications so far that any interpretation you have has to be a little more subtle
