Tell me how philosophy has changed your life.
>>9388985
It hadn'tnd'd
>>9388985
I'm far less convinced of any of my beliefs and am often paralyzed by the thought that life is truly absurd.
Nothing is valueable, everything is just believe, politicis is in truth Post-Politics. One shoud just sit there and watch Star Wars, hope that one time the ideology of neoliberalism and duty of work stops thus you get free money and can watch Star Wars 24/7.
>In the end, I had to call myself a faggot, which really annoyed me, because 1. I don't think that word should ever be used by anyone, let alone me, and 2. As it happens, I am not gay, and furthermore, 3. Chuck Parson made it out like calling yourself a faggot was the ultimate humiliation, even though there's nothing at all embarrassing about being gay.
>>9388918
Not that faggot cuck again
>>9388918
>in the end
U mean 'finally'? The beauty of 4chun is that it leeches all meinung from such words, correct? No need to kys, therefore. Life's just too exciting. Youll be calling yourself 'fucktard' tomorrow.

Why are there so many John Green posts on /lit/?
What are your thoughts on the Folio Society books?
I just eat my money or set it on fire, it's much less of a waste that way.
It's a fine press that makes great bindings. What the fuck do you expect to hear that would warrant a whole thread?
I saved this meme from a thread and I'm looking for an explanation of what it means
i think its very philosophical so can you guys help me out?
>pic releated obviously
It's Nausea summed up in 2500 pixels, amazing.
>>9388838
Social anxiety desu
It's either simply social anxiety or a hyperbolic joke at this "meme".
Kinda like
>when the author uses an adverb
and they post the frogfaggot face
then the response might be
>when the author uses a word
What are some novels about spring time and nature?

Can someone recommend the best books for teaching me how to write? I don't mean sappy motivational stuff, but perhaps an extensive guide to rhetoric, narrative and literary devices. I read that grammar schools of old (like Shakespeare's time) used to have students leave at 15 with a better grasp of language and rhetoric than most modern day Classics/Literature university graduates, and I would like to be able to teach myself the sort of things they would have learned. Pic unrelated. Thanks.
Bumping because also interested

I would recommend the Oxford Guide to Writing by Thomas S. Kane. Discusses elements of good writing, goes into nuances, and provides famous examples that illustrate these qualities.
As I read the theaetetus I notice Socrates speaking of God. As in one singular God. The ancient Greeks had their own pantheon of God's. Why does Socrates seem to speak of one external God?
zeus, plato didnt believe in divine family feuds so he only cared about the boss of olymp
>>9388436
So it is just a translation of Zeus to God?
It's complicated
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monotheism#Classical_Greece
The metaphysical idea of monotheism, or of an originating metaphysical God that would either make the polytheistic mythological gods merely allegorical or at least into lesser entities, was common enough that Plato could speak about it pretty casually.
Plato was preceded by a few generations of people talking quite a lot about metaphysical issues like these, though not nearly as refinedly as Plato did. The Neo-Pythagoreans were influential on Plato and spoke of "God."

Sort of but not really.
Refute his arguments.
(Pro-tip: You can't)
doot doot
Not an argument
>>9388409
What arguments?
>receive a bad book for Christmas/ Birthday
>forced to read it out of politeness
politeness is a spook
the worst is when they give you a book you already have
gee, another copy of this, thanks
>>9388335
read a synopsis in case they ever ask you about it, and throw it into a book bin.
>MFA programs in the US actually pay you to become a writer
What the F**K is going on here!? Is this true? How does a college justify this kind of expenditure?
>>9388311
Checked. And yes it's true now lower your fucking voice.
[whispering] As with any federal department in the US, the right qualifications and a form will make money appear. Artists with artist credentials (eg, in MFA) are eligible to receive government subsidies so they can produce art. It does not cost much and is a way of making sure art does not die in a capitalist system.
>>9388311
It's not that simple though. Most MFA students on a "full ride" are going to be doing TA work. So the school is basically waiving tuition and giving you a stipend to be an adjunct.
>>9388311
The same way it justifies its own existence: griping about the necessity for cultural standard-bearers.
>>9388345
>It does not cost much and is a way of making sure art does not die in a capitalist system.
If you think artists need or want compensation for their art you are a literal philistine
Looking for some good audiobooks (fiction or non-fiction) to listen to while I go for a walk.
The Invisible Man by Ellison
Do you guys actually enjoy audiobooks? How do you stop to analyze a paragraph? Do you get the same benefit from listening?
>>9388291
You just skip backwards and pause.
I can't read because of an eye problem, and I have no issue listening to dense books.
It's all about effort, like with anything.
"Whatever we may ponder, we have to start with the Greeks."
-Eumeswil by Ernst Jünger (Neugroschel translation), p. 310.
Also discusses Stirner a bunch.
So, while you thought you were shitposting, you were actually quoting Jünger.Though actually, you were doing both
junger is an ever bigger meme than stirner
Memes aside, is that a good book?
>>9389176
It's real weird, more philosophy than a book.
Was it ever explained how he turned into a bug? I didn't bother finish this snooze fest
>>9388229
i know this is bait but kill yourself. a thread had to die for your unfunny ''joke''. end thyself. OR ELSE.
Yeah, in the 3rd Edition, they hired Matt Ward to consolidate the lore and he revealed that the Necrons did it with some kind of techno-plague they stole from the Old Ones. The Gray Knights got involved and fixed it, and now apparently two lost Primarchs are coming back.
>>9388229
No it wasn't, but that wasn't the point so it didn't really matter.
What does /lit/ think of Robert Browning? I think that the Victorian era was generally a pretty shit era for poetry, but Browning was easily the best poet of his generation.
Made some excellent guns
Zizek
Tennyson was better
Whitman in the states..
