What historical context and knowledge should I have before reading The Iliad?
Some understanding of Hesiod's works may help get the mythological references, and a book on bronze age - dark period - second bronze age greek history may be useful, but desu you won't get it all the first time you read it anyways.
An important thing to know that I didn't when I first read it is that (I'm not sure how this is translated in english but it should be pretty close to the spanish version) the suffix -ida means
"the son of", like, when Homer says Zeus Chronida, it means Zeus, the son of Chronos.
>>9410440
Most English translations, as far as I know, translate it as "Chronos' son Zeus" or "Zeus, son of Chronos" or something of the sort. They don't use the Spanish suffix.
Do you know what the Trojan War is? That's really all you need to know.
Harold Bloom is an academic slut who will put his name on anything for six bits.
His two (possibly three) anthologies of Tolkien criticism are classic examples of that. In both of them, his contribution is a sneering, patronizing attack on Tolkien, Tolkien readers, and the writers of the essays included in his book. How can that be, you ask? Simple. A book like this is put together by desperate, grovelling grad students, either worshipful or terrified. Bloom's job is to put his name on the result and collect the credit and royalties. If he had any class, he would at least acknowledge the grad students in his introduction.
Good luck with that.

How many books do you read per month, per week?
I am 'new' to reading. I've always wanted to read something because everyone tells books makes you intelligent and all that shit but due to procrastination I didn't read much if at all.
This past month I read 4 books (currently reading sci-fi classics) which is my record but I guess most of you read 5 times more in a month.
By the way how can I increase my speed? I read 1 page for 1,5-2mins.
>>9410216
Usually 10-12 per month, 2-3 per week.
It's not about reading speed. As you read more you might be able to digest things at a faster rate but you shouldn't focus on it.
The point is that you need to set aside time for reading, and ideally enjoy doing it.
Some people will read more because they dont work or dont have a busy schedule outside of that, so they have more time to read.
Instead of asking questions on 4chan perhaps read some of your book. I generally find it's useful when reading to set yourself goals such as read this entire chapter. If you want to read more you can, the next chapter, If you are finding it hard going put the book down and do something else for a bit. This isnt always possible because some books dont use that structure, or chapters are overly long. If this is the case just find points that seem like good parts to stop.
The hardest part is sitting down and starting of course.
>>9410278
That's what I do already. Whenever I take a book I want to read at least one chapter. Sometimes (more often than I'd like) my procrastination takes over even when I enjoy book I keep checking 4chan, reddit and other useless social media,

People who don't read contemporary literature are just afraid to take a stance on a book that doesn't have a historical consensus and established contrary position yet. Try cultivating your taste, and stop being so afraid of what future people think.
I want your best metaphors, similes, and sayings.
I'm an eager person, and love these little aspects of literature, usually short and containing so much depth.
I'm sure other anons love them too.
Don't be too shy to write any.

I've only read a few of his books and they were pretty good. I couldn't imagine reading all of them.
Many of his books are funny and quirky, but I guess he overdid it quite a bit.

I used to think you could self learn and absorb knowledge through books alone pretty well, but after a couple years studying literature and philosophy at university, I feel like half the people here aren't even properly comprehending the books they read. There really is a huge disparity between learning by yourself and learning through academia, and it makes me a little sad to know that there are some people who put so much effort into reading and studying, but without any guidance or direction. They could learn so much more if they just had a little help, but going at it alone feels like you're just wasting time and effort on nothing.
Just finished "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" , i just want to know /lit/ opinion on this book.
I expected a different ending though.

Surprisingly dull and inauthentic, almost as if it's written by someone who's never done drugs. Or someone who wants to sell popular misconceptions about drug use back to the book-buying public.
Still, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Most of Thompson's work was just outright fucking lies. He was more concerned with cultivating notoriety than getting anywhere near the truth.
