Over the weekend I have a chance to pick up those 2 released so far books from this series and I'm looking for opinions of it from you guys if someone has read them. Some school mates have recommended it to me as the next big fantasy and since I don't know much about this author, haven't read anything from him except from the last couple of Wheel of Time books which I know he was allowed to complete.

Is this Stormlight series any good to get into the long shot, I know he's planning 10 books for it in total so it will be a while before it finishes, I don't want another ASOIAF case, tho this author looks more respectable then GRRM when it comes to his work.

So let me know what do you think.

Are you wasting your life if you sit around all the time reading?

Shouldn't you be going on your own adventures, meeting and interacting with real people?

I'm seeing this guy being described as an intellectual everywhere all of a sudden. Is he worth reading?

He is literally the most infleuntial intellectual of the last century (he is the most cited author of the XX century when it comes to academic journals and books) and some lf his books have been required readings in certain fields for decades bow.
What do you think?

way too mainstream op

>all of a sudden
maybe you just have been dormant, harnessing some ultimate saiyan power

I've recently been introduced to Charles Bukowski via YouTube recommended and I've been watching all these interviews on him the past couple days. Part of me thinks this guy is a complete genius but then another half of me swears this guys full of shit. Thoughts?

I like this, that's true. My biggest thing with him was that his stories were so out there and fucking crazy and just convenient enough for the lesson he was trying to teach it's like he must've made this shit but then again is that the fucking point

Anyone else here trying to make it?

I unironically want to be a great writer. I've written a lot and plan to write more. I've gotten a small handful of short stories published, but not in any major venues. Still trying to find an agent for my longer stuff. Does anyone else here aspire to beauty and grandeur?

I wanted to make something like a graphic novel but I suppose it's similar.
Any suggestion on how to start writting?
>>

>Any suggestion on how to start writing?

Think of a story and tell it. It's really just that simple.

Later on, you'll write more stories, and you'll read other stories by other people, and then you'll begin to realize they're doing things with their stories that you're not doing. You'll notice that you like their stories more than your own stories, so you'll start to tell new stories that copy some of the things from other writers' stories in some way. And you'll repeat this process over and over, until you write good stories, and you'll keep repeating it until you write stories that are great.
>>
>>9412359
If you cant have beauty and grandeur than you have a duty to sustain delusions of them.

hey /lit/ I just got this (the satanic bible) and I must say I'm pretty disappointed with it. It's got hardly any spells and none of them work. So what I want is advise on proper magic books (grimoire). Does anybody know of any like the Book of Abra Melin - ones where the spells actually WORK?

>"It is a laborious madness and an impoverishing one, the madness of composing vast books - setting out in five hundred pages an idea that can be perfectly related orally in five minutes. The better way to go about it is to pretend that those books already exist, and offer a summary, a commentary on them"

Is novel writing a madness, when they are made redundant by the availability of concise summaries on Wikipedia and elsewhere? If we accept this, we would accept that the summary of Infinite Jest, to pull a random example, is superior to the full work; and that there are commentaries and reviews which exceed the merits of the original work.

And is the short story a superior form of literature anyway, because of its efficiency, economy, and accessibility, when it comes to an author crystallising an idea without the bloat of plot? For myself, I enjoyed Tolstoy's short fiction a long more than his doorstoppers, and this is the same with Dostoevsky. Anton Chekhov is a marvel.

Is there too much emphasis on long-form writing in literature?

Go figure this quote comes from a man who is world-famous for jump-starting the metafictional approach of 20th and 21st century literature, literally writing stories that are just him describing a book that doesn't exist.

This book is spiritual gold. If you are a Christian, or even have any passing interesrt in spirituality, you ought to read it. Here is an excerpt

>The second bonds of the spirit are imposed from the world and lie closer to the surface than the first. The world, with its concepts, principles and rules, in general with its entire system made into immutable law, lays a heavy, authoritarian hand on each of its offspring. As a result, no one dares even to think of rebelling against it or renouncing its power. Everyone venerates it and adheres to its rules with such timidity. A violation of these rules is considered as a criminal act. The world is not a person, but its spirit in some way stands firm on the earth, influences us, and holds us as if with bonds. It is evident that its power is psychological and imaginative, not real or physical. Consequently, one has only to dispel this imaginative power of the world, and the opportunity for abstaining from its charms becomes more likely for us. That is how salvific divine economy operates in us.

>It is with this purpose that it continually maintains two other sacred, divine worlds in the presence of the world and ourselves. Through them, divine economy constantly reiterates the emptiness of worldly life by calling it to our attention and allowing us to perceive it more keenly. The two divine worlds are visible nature and the divine Church. Experience shows how frequently the mind, obscured by worldly ways, becomes sober through contemplation of divine creation or by entering the Church. For example, a man standing at a window and looking at a tree in the winter came to his senses. Another man, after a disturbing conversation, and having sensed the sweetness of peace of mind in a church, abandoned his former ways and dedicated himself to the service of God.

Thanks for the suggestion brother, I'll pick it up.
>>
>>9411736
What did he mean by this?

No, really. I can't figure out what this is trying to convey. I'm probably too dead inside to understand any sort of spirituality.
>>
>>9411761
He means the Church and nature are two unwordly spheres that God placed for us within the world, and we can generally be woken up and brought back to focus by immersing ourselves in one or the other.

What are your favourite books *on* film, /lit/?

Pic related is mine. If you're at all interested in Ferrara (and you should be), give it a look.

Actually, I should say, you should be fairly familiar with Ferrara's work before you read this - I doubt anyone out there ever plans to, but for the two of you out there who might put this on an amazon wishlist and forget about it, heed my warning.
