Does /lit/ enjoy His Dark Materials?
And eff the movie, burn it with fire.
I think the books are incredibly underrated and overlooked.
>be me

>buys amber spyglass
>like 15-16 at this point, and reading feverishly
>mind blown by entire book
Not much to say beyond yeah they're good books for early to mid adolescents. He's writing more in the same universe (well, multiverse) I believe.

The way Philip Pullman realizes the two characters and their journey was incredibly well done. You felt the psychology of their personality through various expressions (the daemon, the fantasy-like but oddly similar universes and interacting characters)
The concept of a daemon was incredibly new to me at the time. Harry Potter had a world of magic, but it was still used by humanoid creatures. A shape-shifting Jungian manifestation of your anima/animus. As a kid I spent a few nights reading the books wondering what sort of manifestations my own daemon would take. And that was indeed, a form of meditation.

I'll probably read them for the nostalgia factor, but I'm more interested in the BBC series that's been optioned. Hopefully they'll manage to popularise it again because it's a fantastic children's book.
Who here /hatestirner/? His book was so trashy in content, I had to throw it away. If it was "philosophy" he was trying to impress upon me, the reader, he has failed utterly in this half-witted attempt. Would've burned the 'Ego and Its Own' but I was too lazy and apathetic to even give it a proper funeral.
it's a great book if you consider it fiction
I enjoyed it. Got any more Stirner erotica? It's a niche kink that doesn't get exposure anywhere else.

Just checking in after 6+ months, to see how many frogmen, IJ, Ayn Rand, ConfedDunces and Pinecone threads. Bonus points for "What should I expect?" Threads and "what I expected/what I got"

Yeah it's pretty shit. I hide everything at this point with rare exceptions.
So, wait: /lit/ wasn't always like this?
Hey, /lit/. What is the relationship between philosophy and being human? Does philosophy obscure what it means to be human through rationality? On the contrary, does it enrich our experience as humans?
Honestly, I think philosophy or philosophizing is the most uniquely human thing to do.
No other creature, that we know of, can do it.
I will say though, that it can potentially obscure our experience if the abstractions reach a certain point.
>>9425294
>philosophizing is the most uniquely human thing to do.
how did you come to that conclusion? because...
>No other creature, that we know of, can do it.
there are countless things no other creature besides humans can do
>>9425308
>there are countless things no other creature besides humans can do
And? All of them require abstract thinking.
When writing a story in a world vastly different from our own, what is the best way to provide exposition? I want something that is logical and not too heavy-handed. I'm thinking maybe introduce a clueless character and have others explain things to them? Other options?
That sounds really stale. Go for the less fucked out option and introduce a child that's being educated in that culture. Gradually it and the reader become more ingrained
>>9425249
That seems kinda stale to me too. I mean how often do you see the "child grows up, parent dies, now they understand the world" thing?
>>9425256
Any way you spin it, you have to have somebody explain shit to the reader. People who need shit explained to them are outsiders, retards and children. I guess take your pick

Seriously, I threw it away after trying to read it. Maybe I'm just too stupid to understand Stirner.
>"Live From Golgotha" -Vidal
I don't specifically dislike Gore Vidal, but I ripped this book in half after a few chapters in. Who exactly is the target audience of religious satire?
Junot Diaz
"One can never read too little of bad, or too much of good books: bad books are intellectual poison; they destroy the mind.
In order to read what is good one must make it a condition never to read what is bad; for life is short, and both time and strength limited"
Hello /lit/, I am currently in the process of learning cursive handwriting because I want to be able to take notes faster when I enter college.
I have been looking at internet sources and they mention that there are many styles, any particular one you guys would recommend considering my objective is to write fast and have pretty notes to study?
Some of the ones I have been reading about are:
>Spencerian Script
>Round Hand
>Palmer
>New American Cursive
>Copperplate Script
>Handwriting Without Tears
Do amerifats not learn basic cursive in school? Why?
>>9425233
white ones do.
They don't bother to teach it to anyone else.
Srsly.
Removed from the curriculum from sea to shining sea earlier this millenium because like keyboards or rather touchpads or rather voice activation or rather whatever's next is the future, like, you know? Never did a public issue rise then sink so quickly. Generally, at public schools here, cursive's no longer taught. It was deemed a waste of funding. Glad I was in and out before being robbed of this major source of self-identity.
Hello /lit/, I'm trying to look for excellent books on programming as well as technology, as I intend to become a programmer one day. I've always had a knack for for computers too as I'm insanely addicted to gaming. So, any suggestions? If anyone from /g/ could help me out that'd be great too. Also, pic related, I just bought this over Amazon but I don't think it's the best tbqh. How do you all rate For Dummies books, btw?
>>9425228
I'm a beginner too, I learn to programm in Pure Data language. If I have a advice for you, you must to choose what language you want to learn. They are many language, if you define your you can find lot of tutorial in Net

Buddhism is a sect of Hinduism, which is the oldest current religion in the world.

I'm going to be graduating from an MA program next week then immediately going on vacation to another country. I don't have any jobs lined up for when I get back yet, but I'm not terribly worried. I have enough saved up that I'll probably be fine.
However, for the next month, I'll have a lot of free time, and I was wondering if anybody knew of good freelance writing opportunities.
You're the fuckhead with the MA. Shouldn't YOU be the one who knows about writing opportunities?
>>9425105
Why should I? I've been off in my own little bubble reading Derrida and Walter Benjamin for two years. Notice that I didn't say MFA or MA in technical writing.
I'm already enthralled by your entitlement and writing style. I will give you a hundred thousand dollars to continue posting.
>all my ebooks are still on hold from my public library
I'm... Trying.. To read... Why do you do this to me ffffuc
How the hell can you get "on-hold" for ebooks?
>>9424984
>i am a turd wrangler
>>9424987
They can't give infinite ebooks out or they would never be allowed to give out copies in the first place, so they have to pay the publishers for a set amt of copies like 2-8 usually
I'm waiting on dune, a brief history in time, and some other good classic I can't remember what CUZ ITS BEEN SO LONG
What are the best philosophers/books to read to understand why taking a political ideology is a bad thing? Stirner?
>>9424947
Marx, Engels, Althusser, Zizek, Eagleton has a good book on ideology, Jameson
