Reminder that the average person reads almost nothing that requires attention, and speeding through meaningless YA fiction and buzzfeed articles means very little.
Do you COMPREHEND what you read? That's what's important.
Best translations? I prefer academic translations/editions, the more footnotes and paratext the better.
I'd also really love to hear about how I should simply learn ancient chinese because translations are impossible
>>9469604
I think he only wrote the Analects so start with that.
>>9469604
Unless you really like ancient Chinese literature and want to be an academic scholar of that subject there's no point in learning any variety of it.This is true of every ancient language desu and the >translations meme is in fact just a meme, but I digress. That said I'd like an answer to your question too. I have this James Legge version but it's an older translation and, iirc, not the best. Has lots of footnotes, though.
>>9469604
James Legge, download the dual language editions. That'll give you an idea of what you're up against.
Interested in classical Chinese? Get Rouzer or Fuller, plus Pulleyblank, the Pleco App with Kroll installed.
>tfw reading totally destroyed your affinity for movies, tv shows, and video games to the point where you can't even stand an for more than 30 minutes

same, all i can do now for passive entertainment is listen to audiobooks and watch college lectures on humanities and social science, trapped in a patrician dream and i can't wake up
>>9469581
Watch the shinning.
That is the most book like movie in existance even if it is super popular among fags now.
If you can't appreciate it (put effort in not jsut the plot) it is really amazing.
>>9469594
kubrick is a beast, i believe eyes wide shut is his greatest work, so much amazing shit in that movie, so patrician, but class conscious, but also the cuckoldry and sexual jealousy, it's got it all, i think that is the only movie that has can match or surpass literature, such a masterpiece, after i watched that i never saw life the same again t b h can't explain it in a shitpost, but that shit goes hard af

I have several large boxes of books in my house that I want to donate. They're mostly books that I've outgrown - lot of decent children's fiction, like Philip Pullman, Anthony Horowitz, the Edge Chronicles, the Mortal Engines series, etc. I'm also giving away a couple of adult books that I'm never going to read (Robert Ludlum and the like)
The question is: should I give them to my local charity bookshop OR my local library? Who will appreciate them more?
The library won't take them so give them to charity.
>>9469198
Why won't they take them? They have a big children's section

Where does the meme that Mcelroy is difficult come from? Does it all stem from women and men? I'm reading A smugglers bible right now and its my 3rd book from him and once again it just seems like regular stuff any serious reader can deal with. The story in actress in the house was DIFFERENT but that doesn't equate to difficulty. Ancient history wasn't hard at all. It was a suspenseful nail biter desu senpai. The narrative switched from the present to his past and that was about as difficult as it got. Is it all Women and memes fault? pic unrelated.
did you like the ones you've read?
>>9469174
yeah I did. My favorite was ancient history. I haven't read a book that addictive before. It consumed my life. As lame as it is to say it was a real page turner lol. I just wanted to see what was going to happen in that damn apartment. Sriously suspenseful. His books are unique. He has a way of writing that is incredibly stylish at times.

how's a smuggler's bible?
How bad of a career is teaching literature, English, or some other subject? I'm thinking high school or community college. I'm graduating university soon, and basically, I'm scared of getting stuck in a 40-50hour week position, which my degree often leads to. I don't care about money beyond making enough to have a healthy diet and basic living expenses. My dream job would be working 20-30 hours a week and I can't swing that with my common employers.
Any experiences teaching here?
>>9469105
the worst thing about teaching is the hours. you get no free time
>>9469161
This. They own you. Sure you get vacation time, but you're too fried to enjoy anything.
I assure you, no one needs a dumb frog poster as a teacher.
Hey /lit, i have a question:
I am thinking about writing an epic poem which is set in the future in my native language. Would it be worth the effort?
>>9469083
What is your native language.
>>9469091
Hungarian. I have read the works of most of our poets but none of them ever wrote a real epic.
They're still fucking amazing.
Define "worth".
Tell me about Stirner, are his works worth getting into?
Not really

If anyone here is an expert on published collections of Robert Frost's poetry, I have a question for you. I've recently purchased a copy of "The Poetry Of Robert Frost" hardcover edition, (This collection is published by Henry Holt, and Edited by Edward Connery Lathern.) And I realized that it's missing "Asking For Roses" from A Boy's Will. Now, this isn't my favorite poem from Frost, so it's not the biggest loss to me, but it does put into question whether this collection is actually missing any other good poems of his that I'm not yet aware of... The "Boys Will" from this hardcover collection contains 30 poems, but my Dover Thrift paperback copy of "A Boy's Will" totals 32 poems.
Does anyone know why this collection claims to be "complete works" but is missing poems?
I'd really appreciate any help with this.
