Hey /lit/, /int/ here.
I know people must have asked you this question many times before, but here's the deal:
How did the kindle (or any other eBook reader for that matter) change your reading habits? Was it worth it in the overall?

I've gotta read tons of stuff for uni and things like that, and I was just wondering about it.
I've tried it out a few times before (the old ones), but I'm not sure about the results in the long run because I never really bothered buying one up to now. I'm searching for a different way of reading stuff and also a new reading experience.
Note that I'm not asking anything about the reading features it presents, I mean, I'm asking about the results. Has it improved your reading habits or something like that?
If you're a book person or whatever and you have something bad to talk about e-readers, can you at least list some good ways of improving reading efficiency and / or other alternatives to it in your arguments?

I'm looking for a reasonable discussion.

>Has it improved your reading habits or something like that?

It damaged them consistently. As irrational as it may sound (not so much after all, since there are tons of studies that prove the validity of what I'm going to say), you still can't beat a book.
There are processes behind our surface that make reading books inherently more efficient than reading on a Kindle: it will be less distracting, you will skip fewer words, it is actually easier to navigate, and you're already trained to read them.

The only possible pro for Kindles, imho, is the economic aspect, since e-books are generally cheaper, and you can download them anyway... still, you could simply go to a library and read books for free.

Avoid them as much as possible, unless you're reading things that do not require your attention.
>>
>>9486098
another pro i find is for door stoppers. no need to be lugging around the complete works of plato
>>
The best thing about kindles is the built in dictionary.

It allows you to look up words instantly without having to stop reading, very useful for foreign languages or difficult books.

ITT we share times that /lit/ helped us in real life, here, I'll start:

>interview with Argentine owner

>"Sorry, this is my brother from back home, I'll tell him that I have to call him back"
>"[insert cordial Argentine translation of the above]"
>Me: "Was that Spanish or Argentinian Spanish?
>"Argentine, do you know it?"
>"No, I just read a book by this guy named Borges last week and he spoke it"
>"You know Borges? I use to live in the same city as him"?
>holyshit
>Talk about Borges and Argentina for a bit
>ends up offering me the job at the end of the interview
>I accept
>mfw I only read this book cause /lit/ hyped it so hard

Thank you guys so much. This sounds like bullshit but it actually happened to me at 9AM this morning.

New critique thread. Old one is in its stage of death.

I'll start:

Grey grass and concrete lakes;
No sun.

It was a beautiful evening. Evening sun was shining, and clouds hung over like white velvet. The planes were glistening; some of them moving, and some of them still. Troy and his family were pulling up in the taxi at the park and drop. Troy's eyes were glistening, and he had to restrain himself from becoming pretentious, and rude, as he often got when he was at the airport. Troy was a tall boy, and he was/is 16. He had brown eyes, and very dark blonde hair. Troy was incredibly awkward approaching his one true love, his only love, and he's loved her for as long as he can remember. Troy's family got out, of the taxi, and his mother, Katherine, paced along with her suitcase in her right hand, and her handbag over her left shoulder, bending her back to an awkward position, scoffing to herself when it got too much for her. Troys father, having made sure the whole journey that they hadn't forgotten anything, was trying to find a solution for how to get plug converters when they arrive. Troy was put in a tense mood by all this. He hated the combination of being tense, and trying to control himself. He tried to make up for it by talking to his 21 year old brother. "What beauty." he thought to himself. It made him feel euphoric, nostalgic even. Alfie hadn't felt this way for 10 years. Eventually they all got to the luggage check out. It worked automatically, without the help of an atendee.

I've heard zero negative appraisal of it so far; people have critiqued it, but not insulted it. I don't know if that will suffice as evidence that I'm intelligent. I'm done with it, though, because I'd rather defend my maturity, since it's what you've spent the most time attacking. The following are some examples of my morals and ethical code. I believe firmly that everybody deserves a future. If we were to capture Hitler at the end of WWII, I would be against executing him. In fact, if we had any way of rehabilitating him and knowing that he wasn't just faking it, I'd even support the concept of letting him go free. This is essentially because I think that whoever you are in the present is a separate entity from who you were in the past and who you are in the future, and while your present self should take responsibility for your past self's actions, it shouldn't be punished for them simply for the sake of punishment, especially if the present self regrets the actions of the past self and feels genuine guilt about them. I don't believe in judgement of people based on their personal choices as long as those personal choices aren't harming others.

I've been reading Lovecraft recently, going through all his works, and have noticed a trend in his writing. No it's not the constant over-indulgence in huge archaic words, nor is it that he revels in confusing the reader with long strings of describing the scene in too much detail. It's his use of semi-colons.

It's my understanding that when writing fiction it's better to not include them, that they keep each sentence from standing on its own.

I'm mostly just curious as to what you think about his, or any author's, use of semi-colons in their work.

Also as a bonus question: Do you think Lovecraft is a good writer? Or are his ideas the only compelling thing?

Thanks! I don't know where to start with Hindu texts since there's so many of them, so I started with the Upanishads. I've heard many great things about it, I just need to do more reading.

It's almost halfway until may I have nothing to say I am only using this medium to feel like I'm actually doing something with my life. As if all of a sudden I’m gonna become a fucking “writer” because I like the delusion better than the reality. I have no real discernable talents, everything I’m interested in is extremely shallow to impress people? It’s this charade I've been putting up ever since my social inadequacy and laziness started affecting me. I'm not smart, If I’m smart I weep for this world. I’m no artist, no scientist, no “freeman”, no philosopher, I exist and question my justification for it everyday. I will live and disappear. I am nothing. Why am I still fucking doing this. I think about suicide but then I think I'm just trying to be a little edgy shit. Im even thinking this shitty ass work I'm writing is genius, my ego won’t leave me alone. I can't ever spell right. I can't face being a failure even though that's all I ever done with everything my entire life. Either failed and ‘passed’. I’m almost 20 and remembering the last time I’ve made advances at a women in 6th grade. Giving a note to a friend to give to a girl. She chose Patrick. The chubby little fuck. I am only attracted to women and want to fuck women but looking at a vagina directly disgusts me. Maybe it’s because of my virginity. I tried looking at gayporn but that disgusted me the same.

Now I'm worried if this post is discovered in the future and will discredit me but I realize nobody would care
