Have any authors ever written a great short story and then expanded it/reworked it into a great novel?
>>9566137
No, it's never been done before.

Hey thats my idea..
>an historic
Every fucking time.
>>9565979
kind of important, especially when speaking, otherwise people might think you're saying ahistoric.
It makes perfect sense if you say the a not as ayy but as uh or ah
At what point in your life did you realize it was fucking rediculous to want to write a novel?
also subsequently at what point did you realize you're writing is shit, and not better or worse than literally thousands and thousands of other aspiring writers who all very likely will become nothing, except perhaps starbucks baristas, or data entry jockies for some soulless corporation? basically what I am advising is that if you are under that age of 18 or even lets say 20 dont go into the humanites, Dont GET AN ENGLISH DEGREE, Dont for however passionate you may be get a creative writing MFA
>>9565641
this. If you don't major in STEM kys
also stop being creative and be a programmer instead
this post reeks of failure
I dunno. Speak for yourself, loser boy. I got 3 novels under my belt and counting, stuff of mine is starting to get published, and i'm continually improving. This is because when i notice stuff of mine is up to my standards, I correct that.
well /lit/? Can you do magic?
isn't magic proof humans can do magic?
flamethrowers seem like better proof of this
>>9565629
I know you spent like 5 minutes trying to think up a funny word to use, and all you thought up was flamethrowers?
How much do you read daily/weekly?
I know it's a matter of quality over quantity, but I'm curious about other's habits. I personally feel some anxiety knowing that I couldn't possibly experience all worthy books/artworks within my lifespan.
>>9565504
Who fucking cares, just read retard
hhahahahah
what is the meaning of life?
>to find a meaning that makes you feel happy, satisfied, and provides benefit to society

I have a lot of free time this summer and I'm thinking about writing a non-fiction book about the History of South Africa as a way to make a little extra cash and as a resume builder. I'm pretty knowledgeable about the subject, so I think it's totally possible. I love history, so it's not a bother. I would probably sell the book for like 5 bucks on Amazon available online only so it doesn't need to be published or anything. Obviously it would take more than a Summer to finish, but I think I could knock out a rough draft and finish it by next year easily.
Is this viable? Bad idea? Any advice from people who've done this? Zero copies sold type of deal? Any help is appreciated.
>thinking about writing
>is it viable
>good or bad idea
>any advice
>how much will i sell
you'll never finish
>>9565417
What kind of history book? What would you focus on?
>>9565429
A narrative of the history of white settlers, primarily Boers, in South Africa. It would begin with discovery by Portugal and fast-forward to settlement by the Dutch and go on until Apartheid ends, then touch up on modern times.
What does /lit/ think of pic related?
it's a book
its shit unless you want to understand the delusional beliefs of feminists who think it is an accurate predictor of the future
>>9565330
It's not a sci-fi as much as a way to write indirectly about feminism for 3rd world women
My Latin textbook is arriving tomorrow and after the initial language hurdle I plan on reading some works alongside my textbook study. What are some of the most important Latin works? Also, how difficult is the Latin Bible? I am thinking that may be a good one to start with, since I have read both KJV and ESV Bibles
>>9565292
i don't know shit but i'm pretty sure medieval latin that the vulgate bible was written in is different from classical latin. in terms of classical latin people always talk about reading classics like virgil or ovid, although poetry is presumably hard. ceasar's writings on his military campaigns are supposed to be a good introduction, and apparently cicero was a huge part of latin education for ages.
souce: i once contemplated learning latin for five seconds and then i went back to masturbating
Return it, drop Latin and learn all the Ancient Greeks instead. Ex lingua stulta veniunt incommoda multa.
>>9565292
I know both greek and latin and I'll tell you this: drop latin and learn greek, greek literature is way better and you get also the philosophers.
Oh, and you will never be able to read fluently a latin book without translation and a lot of footnotes.
Latin is worth learning, if you really have a lot of time, just for Vergilius, Lucretius and Augustine then you may check out Horatius, Ovidius, Catullus, Tacitus, Petronius, et cetera but surely there are much better works in your mother tongue, heck, most of latin literature is studied just for its historical interest.
A famous italian philosopher, Benedetto Croce said that Nietzsche is a poet and that he should not be called philosopher (heard it at a lecture, can't find the quote).
Someone else told me that he had a beautiful poetic prose, (citing "Thus spoke Zarathustra" in particular ) full of satire as if he wanted one not to follow him but to question his methods itself.
I was thinking of reading https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/nietzsche/
To get a gist of it as, right now I don't have the time to read his books, as I don't expect someone from /lit/ to just gift me a "here's Nietzsche", I hope one can at least answer me these
1) Doesn't he has a positive outlook on life despite his irrational thought?
2) Considering his sister editing how "canon" can his last works be considered? I once heard a teacher argue that it was still written by him and his ideas (I don't agree because he was clearly mentally gone).
If you feel this has been already thoroughly discussed in a specific thread please do link me to it.
>>9565082
You were thinking of reading an encyclopedia entry? Don't hurt yourself studying too hard
1) Yes, his endgame was life afirmation
And he is not irrational, he just doesnt think that reason is human beings superior and universal trait
2) people disregard his last works because they show his most radical side and because of the sister thing, and we have had the original work for a long time
He wasnt "gone" until the horse thing
>>9565082
>clearly mentally gone
Its true, thankfully we have enough refugees who will enlighten us and since our births are stagnating and the world is getting overpopulated(by us white people) muslims will fix everything!
With the rise of sensible political beliefs perhaps you all can actually help me.
How exactly do you take something valuable from capital-L Literature?
I'm an English major, getting my MA right now. It's all useless. The way I've been told to read literature is utter bullshit. It's all (((critical theory))) and psychoanalytic nonsense. How did people read literature before all this? Did they appreciate it aesthetically? Is there some conversation happening in it I'm not aware of?
To be honest with you when I read literature I get next to nothing from it. I've taken two Chaucer classes at this point and it just doesn't leave me fascinated. I mean I understand all the mechanics of what is going on, cultural context, I understand what Chaucer is doing poetically, but I'm not prepared to sit here right now and tell you that it's great and awesome.
How do I come to find literature awesome? I don't want to extract from Shakespeare about how whites are oppressive or any of that BS. I want to read literature and find it to be great. How do I do that?
How did you make it all the way to your MA if you don't enjoy reading?
>>9564904
>english major ignorant of the power of language
Why am I not surprised
>How did people read literature before all this
Haven't you read any old literary criticism? Like Poetics or something like that?
What do you call this phenomenon? So rupi Kaur gets popular and it's totally garbage. Before that mira gonzalez was popular and her work was totally shit. But now rupi Kaur is way more shit than mira and people actually start looking at mira work and saying it's not that bad and they actually kinda like it. How do I get this to happen to my shitty novel? I need one of you to be way more shit than me. What do you call this? Has this ever happened before?
have connections that can make people think you're edgy

Lowering of standards
>>9564737
Is society in general just always lowering it's standards? In terms of literature how would we raise them? Who are the contemporary james Joyce's and Faulkners?
I haven't read a lot of philosophy. Is this a good starter?
>>9564592
No. Bertrand Russell was a foolish atheist. Start here.
Bertrand Russell let his wife sleep around. She even got pregnant a few times with other men's kids which Russell financially supported.
>>9564592
no the complete works of Plato, Beyond Good and Evil, and Meditations are a good start though.
*blocks your path*
is this intro to memetics?
>>9564532
Witz and The Instructions are trash. Other than that, good pic.
>>9564553
This.
I also appreciate the bookmarks being at the start of each work. Subtle memery that did not go unnoticed from this fellow internet participator.
Every time I meet my uncle he gives me a talk about how it's weird for an adult to be obsessed with entertainment and how I should concentrate on doing something "real".
Nice blog post, brah.
Instead of asking strangers you don't know anything about and that are probably stupid kids half way across the globe, you could go outside and check if your uncle has a point or not.
Or you could just punch him in the neck.
He's not wrong.
