Name some authors whose writing style made you go "fuck that's what I wanna be".

Journey to the End of the Night did that for me. Celine is the ideal of my ideal self -- cynical, humorously dark, and publicly antisemitic.

You want to be a complete failure?

For me it's Nietzsche. Intelligent, nihilistic, and with a wicked sense of humor.

This is the first book I could read.. you get drifted in so easily
More of his later work are harder to read, feels like free jazz

Is he unironically the greatest non-modernist English author the 20th century?

Mr. Greene is not nearly discussed enough on this board.

the most important part of literature you are writing are 4chan posts. our internet writing has defined the decade. we are just as significant as the greek playwrights: we are the entertainment for the masses.

how truly beautiful a thing for us to be anonymous in creating this art.

After playing what is now one of my favorite game series of all time Dead Space 1 & 2. I was doing some research into the story into dead space and to my delight one of the devs working on the game was inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. Not knowing who he was I quickly did some research about him and later that week bought myself a couple of his books as well as finishing and re-reading War of the Worlds. So my question is this what other books of those types would /lit/ recommend now that my joy of reading is revived

Hi /lit/, thank you for reawakening my interest in reading. You have helped me re-adopt a pursuit that I will ideally engage in for the rest of my life.

I read this book about a month and a half ago, and would like to know the community's thoughts on it, since I have never seen it mentioned here before. Apparently it is the 3rd-most quoted book after Shakespeare and the Bible, though I can't find verification for this. Comments about the author or anything else related are welcome too.

Thank you in advance.

It's a wonderful fairy-tale of rousing imagination and charm. You can always tell when someone lacks a sincere appreciation for literature when they approach the story primarily from a psychoanalytic lens, IMO. What'd you think, OP?
>>
A splendid fantasy full of character, a witty satire, and wonderfully structured. There tons of memorable witticisms as well as beautiful lines.

Dunno what the nerd said about psychoanalytic lens, but I think this and Through the Looking Glass can be read as a coming of age, Alice's response to absurdity is quite different in each novel, and the latter's metaphoric structures lends itself easily to the reading.

Regardless it is great and fun.

/lit/'s thoughts on Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago?

I liked it although I wouldn't place it in the greatest of the Russian realist tradition but it is very good, watching the movie afterward made me appreciate the novel more although I would hesitantly put the movie higher.

I bought a copy a month ago but then I read a comment by Nabokov who said it sucked and I got put off from reading it.

What is the longest novel you've ever read?

For me it is still Atlas Shrugged. I was able to do it in a relatively short time because I read it during summer in college when I had little to do otherwise, but now I find it hard to read books that long any more.

not even a marxist but equating marx and rand is just offensive. rand was an untrained and unlearned writer who only got recognition because she told the elites what they wanted to hear. as a philosopher she is nothing, on par with self help hucksters or cheap magazine columnists. marx was an intellectual.

Isnt it a joke? I don't think they are seriously equating the two.

That's actually a question scholars haven't been able to answer for the past hundred years.

We actually don't know how to read the parts in German, Latin, Italian, etc. Even people who know those languages don't know how to read them.

Yes, this happened with myself twice. Once when I was 10 I decided to actively become an edgelord, and again when I was 17 or 18 (that time I decided to be nicer, revert from being a edgelord.)
