If I want to casually refer to transgender people is it preferable to use the term "trap" or "tranny"?
Fascinating question, OP.
Etymologically, I believe "trap" is at core unrelated to transgender issues and only inherently refers to having a dick and dressing as a girl and looking enough like a girl to have a straight guy wake up with you... often after meeting at a bar. Often a young or very effective drag queen/crossdresser. In this light, it's not as disparaging, but when used to describe full-on chicks-with-dicks it can be because the "trap" is that you ended up with a guy and there's an implied subtext of it being a sinister gay guy milling around the hot dance clubs for dumb drunk straight boys. Also, chicks-with-dicks can cause offence as well.
"Tranny," on the other hand doesn't possess any such implied meaning, but it's taken as more directly offensive. Because it acknowledges that they're trans... or it... eh... sounds more catty and malicious or something, RuPaul used it and he hates everybody I heard someone say once.
Tranny is fine if you knwo they're cool with it. I let people call me that.
Otherwise, transgirl or trans person. Trap implies they're just doing it as a fetish (in b4) so if they like being called that, they're probably just a femboy who's gone overboard.
That sounds scientifically awfully sound, really.
trans is best as umbrella term.
trap as a word has negative connotations, but when it's used it's often used in a way that still depicts pre-/non-op transwomen as objects of desire. objectified, yes, but everyone is objectified. to be desirable is still nice.
i'm not sexually aroused by myself, but knowing others see you as desirable does wonders for your self esteem.
tranny feels weighed down by the baggage of unpassing hons and erroneous conflation with drag queens so it's my least favourite.
That explains this place...
I used to like referring to myself as a trap, but my boyfriend didn't like it. Other trannies have been saying that to me for a while but I did it anyway because I thought it was cute. I guess they were all right, trap is not an acceptable term for transfolk.
What the fuck should I call the group then? Transsexuals? No, thats offensive. Transgendered people? Nope, this implies being transgender is something that just happens to people. Trans*? Nope, that includes third identities we dont want to be associated with. Transfolk? Nope, because fuck it.
Trannies it is.
Make sure to punch them if they're offended.
Trans folk are already demanding to be called cis. You are talking about narcissists that want to completely control how others think, react and talk. Take a look at this butt plug on Twitter insisting trans women be called cis.
It's always only a few people who vanguard the new wave of PC.
Whenever someone tries to mock it they always say "Oh it's just one person", "Oh it's just a few people" and then when it becomes the dominate belief system "It's 2015 you have to swallow this bullshit now".
