Ask anyone in academics and you'll get pretty much the same answer: these are two different things. You have to separete the philosopher who had theories (mostly about how capitalism works) from the guy who killed a shitload of people partly in the name of said theories (but, under closer examination, it turns out not really). Now take someone like Hayek, who actually supported Pinochet. Was that a shitty thing to do? Yes. Does that mean that Hayek's theories on how government invervention in the economy destabilizes it through skewing information which leads to future crisis is wrong? No.

So yes I would agree that people who admire Lenin indeed have no idea what they're going, and mostly likely they've forgotten about (or never even known about) Kronstadt (something I always like to remind college-communists about, if only to watch them squirm). But that does not mean that the basic idea of Marx, that you need to look to economic classes to understand how society words, is wrong. Nor that such an idea necessarily leads you to a shitty CCCP-style government as the various democratic socialist, and to some degree social liberal, movements have proven by just existing.

This is very concerning to me as a leftist. Somewhere along the line a hardline stance against ALL religious oppression became apologism for religious brutality in the name of tolerance. Leftists do have a point in stating that homophobia and misogyny and such aren't more inherent to islam than to christianity of judaism, but that it is a matter of how these religions are interpreted. No one is saying Islam is specifically more anti-gay than any other religion, but I am saying that how Islam is currently practiced, it is far more homophobic (and misogynistic and oppressive to religious minorities by the way) than any other faith on the planet. Christianity in the Western world has been neutered, so the anti-gay fundamentalist aspects of it have been excised and it lives in a state of harmony with the LGBT world, whereas Islam is nowhere near anything close to living in a state of harmony with any minority group.

I would never condemn any country that promoted secular values. I don't see many in the Islamic world doing that outside maybe Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey and even then there are extremist groups in all three of those countries with significant power
