The LGBT movement, at least in the US, started in California. The gold rush meant that there were lots of men in California, but not a lot of women, since men were typically more fit for mining jobs. Due to the shortage of women, a culture of cross-dressers and drag queens developed, so that you could still go see strippers at a gentleman's club, but not feel gay about it. Of course, this meant that people would be more open about things. Some of these cross-dressers were gay men, some were trans women. Also, the women that DID go for mining jobs were typically really masculine, some being butch lesbians, and some actually being trans men.

I have the opposite problem; I hang out with a friend pretty much every week, and we've been doing that for years. To the point where people think we're a married couple.
Which we're not. We just hang out and talk about nerdy things and go get takeaways, and are deliberately polite to each other because we're both autistic and had the same education in how to deal with normies.

Why else would anyone do it?

Transition to become physically female? Because that's impossible, medical technology can't do that. Transition does not ever make a male body into a female body, but it can make a male into a very dedicated pretender who then has somewhat of a greenlight to live out the opposite gender role. Well, parts of the opposite gender role anyway, since there are portions of the female experience that no trannies just will ever be able to experience.
