I'm flying to Paris to join the French Foreign Legion in January or February.

I'm prior service Army (US), 29 years old. I'm in shape. I don't know French.

What can I expect?
>>
>>32342000
To learn French.
Fast.
>>
you're going to live on an island for 5 years and only leave for deployment and exercise, you'll actually get hit in basic training and if you don't learn french quickly you get beat more. Download Duolingo on your phone and practice French every fucking day so you will at least learn some basics. Also watch some French shit on youtube and listen to some French music. Keep working out and have fun on 5 month deployments in shitty African countries.
>>
>>32342000
expect to get beaten, hazed, bullied all that shit.

also youre used as cannon fodder and the actual french army sits back and pussies out.
>>
how common is seeing combat in the african countries?

what does the fll do over there?
>>
>>32342071
Ivory Coast, Mali, C.A.R. in the last five years.

Shoot bad guys.
>>
>>32342000
I've heard that they're the expendable part of the French military, and no one has a problem with that. If you get wounded and live you're automatically a citizen of France if you want to be.
>>
They teach you French.
>>
>>32342000
Learn French quickly and doublecheck you're in the BMI range they want. Otherwise, prior service means you're an easy in. Pay is not so great.
>>
>>32342014
This. Purchase Assimil New French with Ease, don't buy fucking Rosetta Stone shit. Assimil is made by the french ffs.

Pair it with something like a memrise vocab course and I promise you'll be at least b2 level in a few months.
>>
>>32342000
don't tell them you're a vet, they don't like that
>>
>volunteering to be a literal slave
>to a socialist nation of leftist and advancers of the globalist pussified culture
>actually leaving the USA once you're there
You are so fucking retarded I cannot find the words to explain it.
>>
I'm also leaving for Paris on the 8th of january, but don't plan to hit the gates of Fort De Nogent until the 23rd . 26, also prior service, USMC grunt, saw combat and did two deployments to afghanistan.. J'etudie le francais depuis cinq mois maintenant. Been running my ass off. I'm averaging about 50 km a week right now, 10k in about 48-49 minutes 5 days a week and I'm doing about 15-16 pull-ups.

I was fortunate enough to do some cross training with legionnaires in D'jibouti in 2010. I've had a desire to join the Legion ever since then which has only intensified over time. Can;t wait to get going.
>>
>>32342000
>What can I expect?
Death
>>
>>32342286
if you don't give a fuck about the politics and just want to shoot 3rd world tent dwellers then it's not so bad of a choice.
OP you WILL deploy, it's a guarantee. France is involved in all kinds of shit but the media doesn't give a shit about France so that's why you never hear about it. You're life is going to pretty much suck but at least you'll eat well.
>>
>>32342350
but can do that as a merc why join the FFL as an american it just seems so retarded
>>
Also OP check this shit out. it's a 52 episode course that teaches you a beginner's level of french. Every episode except for the first one is completely in french.

>>
>>32342361

it's the only way to get french citizenship, anon.
>>
http://www.vice.com/read/i-tried-joining-the-french-foreign-legion

This article might be of interest to you OP, it's written by an amerifat who tried joining the FFL and failed.
>>
>>32342361

you can't just go and sign up for a merc group these days. Most good groups want guys who are bi-lingual and have 10 years of experience. Elsewhere.
>>
>>32342367
Why would anybody WANT French citizenship, especially if they are an American? I mean if you're completly asshurt Hillary didn't win and white men are still alive then you might be the kind of person that wants to emigrate to Western Europe, but otherwise staying in the US is a far better option. Americans don't know how good they have it, if I was a US citizen I would stay the fuck put.

So you think guys shouldn't join the Legion because there are more opportunities in the U.S.? I agree that there are more opportunities for training and advancement and benefits and a real social life and freedom and to have a family and so on but some people just want something different and want a completely new challenge and adventure outside of the good old USA and the Legion is one of the very few chances for the average American, vet or no, outside of joining the Kurds in Syria. Some people just love new challenges and new adventures. I know of some guys who served in 2 or 3 militaries and loved the change in culture (both on the job and in a new country) and challenge of adapting to totally new training, environments, languages, etc. To each their own. Life is short, we all have different ways of finding joy and happiness or satisfaction. For many it is a hope for redemption or a new life or an 'adventure'. Bearing in mind that adventures don't always have to be fun and full of firefights, beer, tits and ass and so on...some of the best adventures suck and are only rosy in retrospect due to having survived and shared the experience with great guys.
>>
>>32342434
what do the average french people think of the FFL?
>>
>>32342443
fuck it, do what you want to do. You'll definitely get some unique experiences, probably even more than you got in the US Army. Have fun anon and enjoy eating all of that delicious fattened duck.
>>
>>32342489

I'm not the OP, Im the muhreen that posted here >>32342324 but thanks anyway.
>>
>>32342481
They're respected but don't believe there will be a horde of young french ladies running after you. Quite the opposite actually.

The army is seen as a shitty job apart from some top tier activities like fighter pilot or SF guys. Legionnaires are seen as an elite force of hardass guys.

People don't give a shit about the army in France. Not a lot of flags, no "thank you for your service". Of course, there are still patriots willing to let you their seat in the train, but don't count on it.

There even is some hostility from immigrants and their offspring. The older generations are well integrated, the recently arrived could be as well in ISIS.

This is a problem so big a soldier, mind you, do NOT have the right to go out of base wearing his uniform anymore since it may put you at risk of being assaulted. This happens from time to time, to cadets wandering around their school, the liaison guy driving between two bases, or enlisted guys out of a café-bar.

When the attacks occured, people were bringing food and drinks to the soldiers patrolling the streets.
Soldiers hate these missions called VIGIPIRATE. Especially since they don't carry their rifles loaded and are not well housed. Last months have seen several suicides.
They were sometimes attacked by lunatics, but rarely with small arms fire.

Video related of a guy who tried to roll over 3 soldiers who then shot the guy with Pamas G1 (Beretta 92 under licence). As well as a bystander due to a stray bullet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80mRKaJO06o

Having muslim soldiers guarding jewish synagogues let to protestations from the jews, too.

***

tl;dr : the best you can expect is that every single little thug/chav (the french term is "racaille" (pronounce "rak-eye", litterally "riffraff") knows very well the green and red colors, the green beret, or the grenade brooch means LEGIONNAIRE, and thus business.

You will occasionaly meet friendly people. But they can become annoying pretty fast too.
>>
>>32342000
- rape
- shit equipment (you'll have to buy stuff on your own like rails for FAMAS and pouches for the PC, good shoes)
- guarding mosques and synagogues in France during winter
- not understanding a single shit your sergeant says because he is yelling orders in broken francoserbian or franconigerian
>>
French soldider here. This is what you can expect:
-Cleaning
-Guarding synagogues and mosques
-Living with slavs/niggers/gooks
-Having no civilian freedom

If I were you I'd try to be a jungle instructor in Guyana, or a GCP (coolest Légion jobs IMO).
>>
>>32342000
Enjoy your future French citizenship you crazy bastard. When you get out go try some artisan cheeses and meats. Explore the eu..
>>
>>32342635
thanks for the indepth answer
>>
>>32342131
>expendable part of the French military
they're basically shock troops: what do you expect?

also:
>>32342000
expect your co-legionnaires to be a bunch of very-very-low brow weirdos
my father used to work with them a lot when in the army in the 50's, and though good pals and efficient, they were really crazy mofos (seeing the timeline, most must have been Indochine vets, though, which may explain part of it)

t. French
>>
>>32342416
Am a US citizen. Also former mil. I think OP is an idiot too. I've been overseas I'm never leaving America again.
>>
>>32342367
And in most cases you can't get it. Career not an option too.
>>
>>32342000
Go to cervens.net. Look up user mammikoura. He is one of those many guys who want to find a way to get in the US military.

To my best knowledge there is a number of ex-FFL guys in US military, especially in USMC. They either successfully lied about their history, or were accepted as native speakers coming from countries of interest.

Plus, 29 yo is a bit old already for that much of physical service. You won't recover from exhaustion and possible wounds that quickly any more. You are 10 years too late.
>>
taking shit pay to be the cannon fodder of another country
>but...but it proves I am an elite solder
>I....I can sell books afterwards

top kek, only american would be this dumb
>>
>>32342000
Have fun losing your US citizenship, dumb ass

Cervens.net is a thing my dude...
>>
>>32342286
Sure training and helping al quaida troops in syria is better.
>>
>>32342000
Don't do it you fucking idiot. I'd trade my French citizenship with yours in a heartbeat.
>>
>>32342367
It's not guaranteed, they will find most of the time several ways to fuck you over. The only way to be sure is to get yourself wounded or killed: you automatically get french citizenship "par le sang versé" (by the blood you spilled)

It's metal as fuck, if you ask me.
>>
Expect to be rejected from the start or go out during basic training. The Legion is not a place for veterans who want to be in an army that's not the US army.
>>
>>32342635
>tl;dr : the best you can expect is that every single little thug/chav (the french term is "racaille" (pronounce "rak-eye", litterally "riffraff") knows very well the green and red colors, the green beret, or the grenade brooch means LEGIONNAIRE, and thus business.
what do you mean
>>
A lot of bullshit and old knowledge here, Don't lie to gestapo.
Don't be weak.
Be disciplined.
Have a strong, understandable motivation.

Nothing else matters.

They aren't supposed to hit you anymore, but on the farm you might get hit.

Don't be stupid and try to fight, haze anybody.
