On a serious note women are actually important in special forces. For intellgence purposes, they won't ever be strong enough to be suited for actual combat roles and it would be a disgrace to lower the standards because of women.

But in countries like Afghanistan women aren't allowed to talk to other men but they are allowed to talk to women, and a lot of information travel through women in those countries. When the soviets were in afghanistan they realized that the female red cross doctors had better intel than the KGB because they could tap into the female gossip network.

Hilariously enough sexism is the reason that we need women as intelligence operators.

Funny thing is, most of the European CT and special police units do allow women, and they're held to the same standards as men. You see the occasional chick mixed in with them. Europe in general doesn't have the same lowered standards for women, and most countries allow them to serve in infantry. The women actually do their jobs in the military, and they have the respect of the men because of it. It's a lot different from the US.

Also keep in mind that the standards for urban SWAT style police units are different. Less emphasis on load carrying and long term endurance, because they're expected to travel less and have a lot more support from home base.

Also keep in mind that Rainbow recruits smart people of all backgrounds, and every operator is basically a genius. The shooting and physical training is easier to work on, and even women can be taught to shoot well and clear rooms.

And remember, it's not real. It's a video game. If it were realistic, all the operators would be mostly Americans with CIA, DEVGRU, or CAG experience, with the occasional European guy and a couple of Russians for when they want to make sure the hostages don't talk too. Having girls doesn't negatively affect the gameplay.

GIGN means nothing.

When you hear of the GIGN, you think of the historical GIGN. It doesn't really exist anymore. It was merged with other units some years ago to create a "super" GIGN (they just kept the name, as a brand) in order to face new form of terrorism (like in Russia, India, and they were right, see Paris attacks).
No women in the GIGN at that time, but some women were in the EPIGN (intelligence...). When the unit was merged with the GIGN, they kept that role in the new GIGN. But there are no female in assault role (the actual, historical, GIGN).

As for the standards, they're to the standards of their sub unit, not the same standards of the GIGN as a whole.

Like a post mention in the thread, there are women in the RAID also, and recently, they were training 2 female snipers

Furthermore, there is nothing new about about the "strong, independnt women" archetype seen in entertainment media, that's been a trend since atleast the late 70s. As I said, rainbow six has always had female characters in that role. So now we are in a bizarre situation where 3rd feminists act as if this is not case, and there has been a discernible push put these kinds of characters into entertainment media...even though they are already there (ex the controversies surrounding "black widow" in the Avengers franchise", or the supposed "new" feminism of the Tomb Raider series even though it was a series that aways had a woman in the leading role)

What I think is really going on here is that prior to about 2008, the majority of writers and directors and creative talent producing content were not 3rd feminists, and thus even though they were putting females into action roles, these were not the "right" kind of female characters, and the reaction to this push mainly stems for that, so because of that there will be added scrutiny anytime a female character fits into this trope.

Yeah that's kind of a bad argument. If the people behind this game were making Quake 5 Arena, then realism wouldn't be an issue. The fact that the game makes any pretenses at all towards being "tactical" means realism is going to be more important than play balance. I don't there really is much room for compromise. What you end up getting with modern military shooters something where the "game" aspects aren't fun because the gameplay has been watered down for the sake of authenticity, and the "simulation" aspect isn't fun because the authenticity has watered down for the sake of gameplay. Personally I think would rather just play Quake 5, and the sales for current generation shooters indicates a lot of people feel the way I do.
