I'll admit I've never shot it because I'm too broke, but the 5.7x28mm seems like a great round for personal defense from what I've read. Low recoil, and better armor-piercing capabilities when compared to, say, 9mm. I know that here in NJ, a couple towns over, a police department has a full auto P90 in the trunk of every cop car.
>>28896295 The thing is you don't normally *want* AP in a PDW. You expecting muggers wearing flack jackets? The cops actually carry these because they have LESS AP than the 5.56, which is what they are actually an alternative to here. The cops are still carrying 9mm and this is back in the trunk where they used to carry a shotgun before those got replaced with M16s. In context this is a step towards lower firepower to decrease the chance of killing innocent bystanders.
Bullpups are still a bit wierd to me. There are advantages and disadvantages. That M16 is a LOT more accurate, in practice, and it balances better as well, so I'd clearly rather have it. On the other hand, this thing packs nearly that much firepower into a much smaller storage space. There are some circumstances where that is very important.
>>28896184 If it weren't simple blowback it wouldn't be so shit. Then you could actually convert it to a caliber that isn't a failed forced meme. 9mm, .40, .45, even 10mm could fit horizontally. A couple more mm and you could fit .44 AMG. Those might actually be some use with progressing bullet technology instead of using old technology and making it smaller to the point of making it barely effective.
>>28897062 >I have no idea what I'm talking about: the post
The issue isn't that it's blowback, it's that the magazine requires straight walled ammo to feed properly. Nearly all common calibers that would fit into a magazine as wide as the top of a P90 are tapered so they wouldn't feed.
10mm is the most commonly requested conversion, because it's one of the only calibers that could feasibly work with the style of magazine the P90 uses. It has nothing to do with the operation of the weapon.
Excellent PDW when used how they were designed. Completely pointless as a civilian firearm in every conceivable respect, and all the bitching about the design comes from people that think it's supposed to be a SMG.
>>28897430 >10mm is the most commonly requested conversion, because it's one of the only calibers that could feasibly work with the style of magazine the P90 uses. It has nothing to do with the operation of the weapon. So why don't they do it?
>>28897479 Because even though 10mm is less of a special snowflake round than 5.7x28, it's still a special snowflake round that not many guns are chambered in. The fact that you could still easily find it after Sandy Hook speaks volumes for its popularity.
I'm not saying it's a bad caliber, but it sure isn't common. Considering the PS90s hit rock bottom prices a couple years back (I got mine for $800 NiB out the door), I think it's fair to say that FN has more or less given up on the platform.
>>28897517 At least 10mm is effective in normal circumstances, i.e. semi-auto and against unarmored targets. It's actually good as a self-defense round. A P90/10 would be a fantastic home defense gun, backpacking gun, and hunting gun for anything up to mid-sized game.
>>28897687 You can't hate the 5.7x28 round for what it was designed for, however. It was designed to be shot out of the P90 in short, controlled burst. The fact that we have a gimped version of the gun is the NFA's fault, not FN's. As for having gimped ammo, MAC (I think it was MAC) and many other youtube channels have shown that regular FMJ 5.7x28 bullets will penetrate IIIA body armor reliably.
I think the Five SeveN is a stupid gun because it's trying to make a round do something it was never intended to do. 10mm out of a full auto P90 would be uncontrollable, but would be ideal in a semi-auto version.
In short, blame the gubmint. If we could get a real deal P90, it might have taken off more in law enforcement (where it's still a pain to get select fire weapons) and the civilian market. If it took off, FN might have felt compelled to make a 10mm version, but as it stands, it just isn't worth their time.
Oh well, if you want a 10mm subgun/pdw, there's always the 10mm KRISS Vector coming out.
>these people saying they want the same thing I've been trying to design that will probably never see reality Still cool though
>>28897743 Lever delayed blowback plus the long travel required for downward ejection behind the magazine should theoretically make it a lot more controllable than, say, a 10mm MP5.
>>28897783 This is a good idea because 10mm is a straight walled cartridge, but most of the US gunbuying market would probably rather shoot 9mm most of the time due to cost. Unfortunately 9mm isn't straight walled and would likely have problems with a straight horizontally mounted magazine, unless it was designed to alternate bullet rotation (for example, top row is pointed right, bottom row is pointed left).
>>28898025 >Supposedly the Gen1 version can easily be converted to full-auto They can be. All you have to do is move the spring that puts tension on Sear C out of its slot so that it's not exerting tension on the sear and the gun is in full auto mode. Note that it functions like a lightning link in an AR insofar that it's always in full auto mode. It's not like a true P90 hammer pack where a short pull is semi auto and a long pull it full auto.
To convert it back, just slide the spring leg back into the notch in Sear C. This only works in Gen 1-2 hammer packs or Gen 3 hammer packs with an aftermarket hammer. Gen 4 hammer packs are impossible to convert because they're lacking the safety sear (auto sear).
I'm currently saving for one with a black ring sight as my second SBR. It's what's been getting me through my work days. I've thought about editing a DO IT FOR HER pic with PS90 pictures to keep me motivated.
Should be another two months before I have enough money. Hopefully nobody buys it before me.
>>28900697 Not that anon, but if I remember correctly a swiss anon and his buddies were doing something (cleaning?) their 550's when they realized they could do all sorts of funky stuff like what is going on there.
>>28900143 If you have a stamp and are using your NFA firearm, do you need to carry your paperwork with you? Asking for it without probable cause is a 4A violation, but it wouldn't surprise me if the law was unconstitutional in that matter. Fuck I hate the Feds so much.
>>28901282 I carry my paperwork in my pouch and many other people carry it with them too, I'm not sure if it's the law but it's a nice "fuck off" to anyone who tries to bother you over it, not that that's ever happened to me anyways.
>only ATF agents can ask to see your stamp >it is suggested by the ATF to keep a photocopy of your approved Form 1 with the weapon at all times >Any LEO or federal agent who is not ATF does not have the right to ask for your Form 1 because it's technically a tax document that they have no right to see >a LEO might hold you and call an ATF agent to check if he's a dick
Some popular ranges do have regular visits from ATF agents. If you're caught without a tax stamp, I'd imagine that would create a hell of a lot of trouble for you. Also, some states have laws saying you legally need to keep a copy of your stamp with the gun, but that's not on a federal level.
>>28896184 The caliber and gun would be perfect for law enforcement due to it being able to defeat armor yet not over penetrate barriers and suspects, thus reducing bystander kills or injuries...but politics will never allow this thing to be adopted.
>>28903730 >barrel >entire bolt >higher power springs for the 10mm blowback action >magazine body (current one is too wide) >magazine follower >magazine spring >magazine helix feed ramp >10mm barrel will probably be a larger diameter than the 5.7x28 barrel, so the receiver will probably need machining to accommodate it
So no, it wouldn't be easy at all. You'd be better off just designing an entirely new firearm.
