If you want an A1 build, now is a great time since Brownell's has started stocking NDS uppers and lowers.

If you assemble it properly, no. The only fragile part would be the upper portions of the handguards due to the brittle nature of the materials used into their construction. Otherwise, they are light, sweet-shooting rifles that look cool and have almost no recoil.

I have no clue when parts kits will be readily available again, and I doubt anyone else here could tell you either. I'd just go piecemeal, you can get everything needed from the links I provided. The only glaring omission I can see is the A1 safey selector, which can be had here; http://www.apexgunparts.com/colt-m16a1-safety-selector-lever-good-to-very-good.html

Cool thing about the A1 safety is that, even when installed with a civvie FCG, you can still switch it over to the Auto position. Not that that does anything beyond that, but it sure does feel cool.

I cheated and built a transitional 723 clone instead.

That way I could get away with using A2 parts instead of waiting the (at the time) year+ wait for a NDS receiver set.

Besides, A1 is best A.

And even based Vining used one.

quick question for anyone who can answer it.
I bought a lower receiver and didnt know about the 21 y/o law. i did a bit of research and ATF defines that the once the lower receiver has been mated with a rifle barrel it is then deemed as a rifle. Couldn't I Just bring my upper receiver for the project in and just mate it there so it can be written off as a rifle on 4473?

I work at a gun store in NY. The owner is super strict when it comes to selling lowers to people under 21. But I guess it depends on how chill the people at the store are. I believe for the store to be able to sell it toy you as a rifle (you supply the rifle upper) they need to have a manufacture's license. I know it sounds dumb but that's what they tell us to tell customers who ask.
