What types of benefits would one enjoy after 20 years of US military service? Could you reasonably live off of them for 30-50 years until death? Surely this isn't possible...

That's actually pretty fucking incredible. I understand that 82k in 2036 is deceptive because of the inflation that will occur before now and then, but it's just incredible that the government can dish out this cash with a straight face. That'd be pretty dope to be in your mid 40s with 82k/year in your pocket for doing nothing. If you already have your house paid off, you'd be free to live as you pleased. If he's not, then coaching a girls softball team pays pretty damn well. If he retired as an E-9 at 20 years, he's pulling down about 35K.

My father retired a First Sgt after 30 years with the 101st. Only gets about 70% disability pay along with his retirement. Makes about $85k/year from that. Plus full healthcare through the VA and medical system.

The added benefit that he can continue to draw his full military retirement pay AND work a full time job "for fun". So pops works at this plant where he took a job as some midlevel manager making about $70k/year as well as pulls his mil pay.

Clearing like $155k as a 50 year old "retired" man who dropped out of highschool in the 70s and didn't get his GED until the army made him in the 90s.

I'd say the 20 year plan is suitable for most mid-life leisure lifestyles
