It depends on shot placement, aircraft systems, and finally projectile type. A standard fmj is pretty bad but an exotic like incendiary or explosive will take out more systems.

A grenade launcher in 30mm or 40mm can also create a cascade of failures easily and quickly, especially the repeating variants.

.50 BMG was mounted in P-51s, F4Us, etc, and brought down many aircraft in WW2 dogfights. That's the origin of the disinfo.

The rest of the story is there were 6 guns on a plane, their points of impact regulated to converge less than 500 feet from the muzzle, each firing about eleventy rounds per second in thin, cold air. Thats what it takes to bring down an early aircraft with a BMG.
