By the time the original M14 production run was no longer adequate, the SCAR existed.

Besides, the AR-10 was always, always, always a better rifle than the FAL.

The FAL was originally going to be made in an intermediate caliber, but some dickhead US brass said that they wanted MUH BIGGUR BULLITS or they wouldn't buy it. So FN scrambled to make the gun take a bigger caliber, and after pushing the design to the limits so it could take 7.62x51, the US said "lol fuck u" and decided to go with the M16 anyways.

Yes and no. Mechanically it has little to do with the FAL, it's basically an improved AR-18. It fills the same roles though.
