I get why people don't like FrogLube. If you don't actually follow the directions and use it like a normal CLP, it WILL gunk up.

The shit is fucking amazing when you apply it the right way though.

>people are still buying boutique oils made from unicorn tears and other bullshit
Mobil 5w-30 and lithium grease cover all my lube needs. A single bottle of motor oil can lube a gun for pretty much ever, and costs less than a tiny couple oz. bottle of "gun oil" despite doing the job just as well.
>>
>>28656822

did i mention frog lube is twice the cost per ounce than the big 3 i mentioned? whats the point of fag lube
>>
>>28656802
Disassemble the weapon, use solvent to strip ANY AND ALL lubrication out of the gun the first time you apply it. It does not react well with residue of whatever you used before.

Then take a hair dryer and heat up the parts until they're hot to the touch. I didn't like having this extra step at first, but it only takes two or three minutes at most.

Then scrub the froglube into everything other than the firing pin/striker channel. Cover everything metal with it, then let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour until the gun has completely cooled.

Then you just wipe everything off and use the gun "dry." The shit bonds with the surface of the steel, protects it from rust and lubricates it. You'll feel how smooth it's gotten just racking the slide.

After shooting, all you have to do is wipe off the carbon, no scrubbing should be necessary. Nothing sticks to it, but you can reapply a little more lube after cleaning just to maintain the coat.
>>
>>28656873
>>
>>28656782
It's gunk up even when applied properly and stored in a cold place.

It's rebranded rollercoster lube and was designed for that. A lube that needs several steps to apply doesn't have a place on a gun.
>>
>>28656863

/k/ is the only place ive heard of using motor oil for guns its affordable but it seems awfully viscous for gun parts. smells bad and stains clothes too.

The idea that you have to buy special mineral oils for your guns is pretty modern, and the result of marketing. Motor oils have been used for decades with no ill effects.

The viscosity shouldn't effect the function of the firearm if you apply it correctly, no matter what oil you're using. You should only need a few drops for the entire gun.

I use ballistol for lube and CLP if im getting rust of a surplus gun.

Ballistol is 100 years old, its not the product of modern marketing. You can only use motor oil for cars and guns really, ballistol can be used on leather, wood, metal, all kinds of shit.
>>
>>28656896
You can use high temp red disc brake grease on your guns that need grease.
>>
I use Hornady One Shot with Hoppes 9 if I need a solvent.

I use this for grease:

Whatever you do, don't try olive oil. My grandfather left me a Luger when he passed. The first thing I did was soak it down with degreaser then blow it dry. I then got the bright idea to lube it with olive oil. Needless to say it gummed up bad, real bad. I had to take it to a gunsmith to clean out, and when I got it back there were hammer marks and screwdriver scratches everywhere. This thing WAS 99%. I signed the waiver without reading it so I couldn't hold him liable.

>>
>>28657065

Well I know WD-40 dose if you applied heavily but I never do , just spray on a gun shirt and wipe on , reapply as needed. The rust inhibitor one works fucking magic on keeping rust off. I just add some grease ( car or parts grease ) to rails before I put any guns up.

Hoppes is a solvent not a lube. Froglube or coaster track lube is a good replacement for Vaseline, which is used by people near salt water to prevent corrosion and lube. Froglube is a good storage lube since it won't drip off over time. Just get the new stuff that doesn't mold.

It makes cleaning carbon off parts very easy, like most greases. It's no wonder lube but it works and is easy to find.

> Reverse Engineered Roller Coaster Track Lube
> Oxidizes over time into rancid snot.
> Turns to goo when mixed with CLP or other 'normal' lubes

Yeah, it's shit, not surprised.

Froglube? Ehh, nope.

Rem Oil *is* shit, and it's 50% mineral spirits according to the MSDS. I'm not entirely sure if it even contains Teflon, like is claimed. (Same great lubricant since 1913, but PTFE wasn't invented until 1938, what?)

Rem Oil might be OK if you're just keeping rust away on a store shelf; but froglube is only going to be good if you use it all the time, and are constantly cleaning your guns. Long term storage, or in combat, you don't want either

For 95% of people, CLP is fine, all they need to do is sell it in $2 bottles like Rem-Oil and all the Fudds would buy it instead

>>28656939
FP-10 / Weaponshield have a really awesome anti-wear additive, and are top notch gun lubricants.

Motor Oil has similar characteristics (Anti-wear additives, synthetic oil base, etc), main downsides are smell, and poor rust prevention ability compared to firearm CLP's

>>28657065
It'll form varnish over time on items, so will Kroil, actually. Neither are designed as lubricants.

>>
>>28656931
>You should only need a few drops for the entire gun.

For lubrication only, yes. People use modern lubes to prevent corrosion and make cleaning carbon easier.

Motor oil is a great lube but it sucks in a holster when it gets on your shirt, it's a terrible corrosion prevention tool when just a few dabs are added to the moving parts and it's absolutely useless for carbon clean out for the same reason. It has its place but it's not right for every situation.
>>
>>28656745
I don't understand why people have so many problems with this stuff...

I use frog lube paste on all my guns, haven't had a problem with any of them.

I also use it off and on with my issued M4, without stripping off the residual CLP. Never had a problem there either....

Ballistol is shit from 120 years ago. You use ballistol for everything weapon related but not for lubing your funs.

Ballistol softens old leather, gives driy wood a very neat finish but you dont lube your guns with it. it gunks up and its way too viscuous

Mineral Spirits / Stoddard solvent / Varsol (all the same thing), it's a degreaser and solvent solvent. It works great to clean greasy or oily firearm parts, but has no lubrication, or rust protection ability. It also evaporates relatively quickly.

In Rem Oil, I think the idea is the Stoddard Solvent evaporates, leaving behind a really thin film of oil; but in practice *everything* seems to just evaporate away over a period of a few days to weeks, especially in warmer environments.

It's also supposed to contain Teflon(PTFE) to help with boundary lubrication, but PTFE is a white solid, and Rem Oil is a clear liquid. There are some fluorinated telomers (PFPE, for instance) which act very similarly to PTFE as a lubricant, but without analysis data, I can't actually tell if Rem Oil contains anything at all, much less Teflon

You faggot brake cleaner is just heptane (7 carbon alkane) and acetone.

Hoppes is just straight up kerosene in a fancy bottle, which is just a crude distillation containing hexanes (6 carbon alkane) through dodecanes (12 carbon alkane).

As for ballistol, inredients are
--pharmaceutical white oil: (Mineral oil, n-alkanes 6-20 carbons)
--Oleic acid: ( animal fat, increases viscosity )
-- Amyl alcohols
--- essential oils (fucking perfume to make it smell like black licorice)

Guess whats in motor oil numbnuts?

--Amyl alchols

Safe to say it's good to have some different grades of lubricant, right?

>For super light weight thin oil, I have some CLP.
>For medium weight, (just a little thicker than CLP) I have a spray bottle of Ballistol.
>For heavy oil I have motor oil
>For thin grease I have white lithium grease, it's good but it tends to dry out pretty quick
>for thick grease I have wheel bearing grease, which doesn't seem to dry out, and it sticks where you put it. It adds a little resistance to movement initially, but is a super good lubricant otherwise.

I personally like using wheel bearing grease on my AK (rails, etc.), some ballistol on the FCG for good measure. AR wheel bearing grease the carrier rails or white lithium, then a liquid oil on the bolt. I use a thin film of grease on the AK bolt.

That's another train of thought I usually encounter.

I sometimes wonder if using a liquid lubricant on a firearm is even sensible, considering it will never stay in place. It always runs off in a day or two. If it's not rusted together, grease it--because the grease stays put.
