Some places in PA see temps from -10 to 95+ F during the year. We get a lot of ice during the winter (generally), so the roads are covered in salt, calcium chloride, and whatever other ice-melting chemicals out there. This causes a lot of potholes, plus makes your car rust out pretty quickly.

Many of the roads are 'stacked' on each other as well, like it's common to have a concrete "first" road, and then multiple layers of asphalt road on top, as the layer underneath wears. This kind of messes up the road foundation a bit, water gets in and the road cracks, etc; so eventually they remove the *entire* road and simply re-do everything from scratch, but that costs money, so more often than not they just keep laying down asphalt stacks and call it a day.

PennDOT is also kind of shit-tier when it comes to overall work efficiency, It took 10 years for them to finish a 2 mile section of highway near my house.

All this combined make for very bad roads.
