Because I'll bet on the guy who competes with his local kendo team before I bet on the guy who spends ten minutes outlining why some obscure european weapon is superior to the katana when he's never tried to strike anyone who was striking back.
>>28598229 All "Masterwork Bastard Sword" memeing aside, Katana is a pretty decent all-rounder sword with some extra handyness on horseback and a bit of a weakness in dueling due to lack of a serious handguard.
>>28598004 Thin blade machete or thick blade Kukuri. They're incredibly useful for removing vegetation thin and thick respectively. Low key bladed tool for truck carry if that's an issue. No pommel, so you have to be good at follow through, no handguard for that matter. Thick bladed Kukuris are like hatchets with an extended edge.
>>28598590 >Katana is a pretty decent all-rounder sword with some extra handyness on horseback no
>short blade >heavy for it's size >balance point is fucked due to lack of pommel and lack of distal taper. >bad at thrusting >not as capable at cutting as a broader, thinner, curved blade
>>28598004 hand and a half sword/longsword from a legitimate company
IE the Hanwei Tinker Longsword or arming sword >spring steel blade so resistant to improperly aligned cuts >well balanced >proper distal taper >cheap as fuck compared to swords that punch in thier weightclass http://kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2394 http://kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2404
A machete. Not a faggy coldsteel one, but a real colombian one from a hardware store. It's a versatile tool and weapon you can use to do anything from chopping wood to cutting grass to beheading (infidels) fish and other animals definitely worth getting before other gay swords because you'll actually get some use out of it.
>>28598004 Either an oak bokken, a synthetic or wooden longsword or single-handed arming sword, depending on if they're interested in western or eastern.
then go to a local club, and start to learn.
And to be absolutely frank - the sword is obsolete as a weapon. but learning to use them is vastly more fun than any range I've ever shot at.
After you've tried them at a club, and you have some sort of understanding of how they're used (so you're not flailing around like an obese neckbeard ), then, and only then start thinking about buying anything in metal.
and if you are buying to use for defence etc, a) you're an idiot, buy a gun, and b), get a mace - far more effective without spending months training to know how to use 'em.
I just own a set of hanwei practical longswords (the blunt and sharp) and they are excellent. I use them to spar with albion blunts and test cut with a bunch of old richfags who have albions. >be me >have my entry level gear like a BKS longsword and muh hanwei >go to a local frei fechter meet >everyone has albions >elitism intensifies >until I start cutting 2 liters in half with muh "cheap" sword >and sparring against albion blunts with my tinker and BKS >guy has albion munich >boner intensifies >they're using it to cut milk jugs >ask the guy how it thrusts >idk I haven't done that before >mfw
>>28599404 >hanwei >katana >autism your point being? They're the only name worth mentioning regarding yuro swords for serious cutting/sparring until you get to Valiant armory gear and the albion squire line
>>28599701 and yet you don't know to expediently dispatch a dindu with said machete or hunting knife
because you don't know hema
because you don't own a sword or decent dagger and don't spar with them
also >machete sharpened to clear brush/softwood >at the proper angle to cut flesh >machetes cutting through bone effectively >not dropping a few shekels on a decent sword to display in your study >being too pleb to have a study >being to pleb to display a cool ass real sword in it
>>28599784 Holy fucking implications nigga > implying HEMA is in any way necessary or effective against some nigger > implying I use these tools to dispatch of assailants, instead of the reasonable, using it on plants and animals approach > implying i need an overpriced piece of autism to spar
> 1945 + 71 > displaying swords school shooter tier or really old man tier
>>28599984 Jesus christ the fedora > would you like some brandy as we step into my study, m'lady? > this is where i like to sit in solitude as i explore and broaden my mind to attain enlightenment through my own intelligence > not like those ignorant thugs who spend their time in 'clubs', 'partying' and 'drinking' > quite
>>28598928 >short blade >heavy for it's size >balance point is fucked due to lack of pommel and lack of distal taper. >bad at thrusting >not as capable at cutting as a broader, thinner, curved blade So wrong.
This thread reminds me, is there a certain term for underage b& and manchildren that don't own a gun but walk out the door with 20 knives on them every day? You know the kind who buy every piece of tactical blade shit but never have a firearm? I swear there is some kind of poser name for them.
>>28599324 This. I mean getting a sword for shits and giggles makes sense but thinking of using a sword for self defense is autistic because guns exist. Before some Europoor cuck says "durr you don't have to reload a sword" changing a magazine takes seconds and if you are facing multiple attacker then using a sword in the first place is retarded
>>28603899 Fun fact, last week I had a 12-15k € (estimated) 16th century sword in a my gloved hands. You are now aware that you can actually collect historic weapons, or even better, trade with them. They are beautiful items, with lots of history and a high montetary value. Also, cuttin shit in your backyard is just as fun (if not more) as plinking.
>go on /k/, every single sword thread >muh gun is better >muh self defense >muh machete
Thats why the good discussions are now on /his/ or /asp/, we leave the Longsword vs. Katana stuff to you.
>>28598004 probably one of good quality metal that isnt too heavy and feels nice on the grip. personally i prefer double edged blade with symmetrical hilt and handle incase i reverse my grip nothing gets in the way
>>28604394 for BoTN/HMB stuff they are the best in the business.
their sharps are well handling brick shithouses (like a non shit zombietool. inb4 zombietoolfag REEEEEEs about how they aren't overbuilt overpriced junk), but vary aesthetically depending on what you ask for. I knew Illya back when he lived in south florida and the work he pumps out is goddamn beautiful and 100% historically accurate.
I'd really like to get a bare blade from them, then drop the shekels to let this guy make fittings for it, then when crusader monk comes re opens their doors get a grip and scabbard for it. http://www.yeshuas-sword.com/ http://www.crusadermonk.com/
>>28604589 reading comprehension isn't your strong suit is it.
>hurr so double the weight my sword clocks in shy of 3lbs and has a 1.5" balance point, so no contrarian anon.
>hi i don't into sentence structure they make blunts for reenactment combat and sharps for test cutting. completely different blades on each. The only downside is that they, like many american makers, don't have a guy who does proper cord wrapped leather grips. bare wood is fine on some swords, disappointing on most. But if crusader monk stops playing soldier and starts doing grip jobs, it's easily remedied.
>>28605363 Na he is right, you get a good 10-12 inches more reach for the same weight on a European sword (early 16th century), the balance point is closer to the hilt and the blade is much slimmer in profile. Doesn't mean a Katana is a bad sword, just that you should use it a little different.
>>28606060 >This was my point. I knew he was quoting Jesus, just not how it was relevant. Jesus is clearly pro sword. If you are a Christian you are practically obliged to buy a sword, it is your religious duty. Let the sword-grabbers know this, it says so in the New Testament!
You also should not be a cheap fuck and bu some CS or Hanwei shit, he clearly states that you should spend top dollar for a top sword. Check http://www.templ.net/english/ for starters.
>>28605824 Limmi letcha in on a secretz you new guys dunno yet. Katana lengths were based generally on the height of the person wielding it. Your average jap was much shorter than those in the west, it created a trend of shorter swords.
I'll agree with you saying the balance point is different and needs to be used different as a result tho, instead of LEL LEL BALANCE POINT IS FUGGED or KATANA THICK ONLY GOOD FOR THRUSTING, when that's such a fucking absurd thing to say it's hilarious.
