what say you /k/?
is the .357 outdated as a self defense cartridge?
.357 Revolvers are TERRIBLE enclosed space guns.
Not only is the .357 loud as fuck, the sound is even closer to the shooter because of the gapping of the cylinder.
.357 is a terrible HD round. Get literally anything semi auto.
Even an AR-15 in doors is quieter than a .357. There is no POSSIBLE hearing damage, there is only ASSURED hearing damage.
AR-15s are better all around HD guns, and no .357 can even come close.
The S&W TRR8 Is a military revolver in 357 Mag. 8 shot cylinder. It has its uses in the context of using a breaching shield with a side arm. I believe a revolver can use higher powered loads as well
For a gun you leave in a room until needed, picking a sidearm is a poor choice. They massively compromise the very important feature of ease of aim for the sake of carry-all-day portability.
And to also massively compromise capacity for the sake of personal preference by choosing a revolver on top of that, it's far from ideal for the role.
But if your priorities and budget are such that it's the best you have and you don't care to buy something better for the role and train with it, there's nothing wrong with that.
I have both a .45 auto and .357 mag as bedside guns, waifu has .38 spcl. Also most likely place I'd be firing is down the narrow 12ft hallway pointing out to my living room and front door. I have no option except bleeding or blown eardrums.
Revolvers are an outdated platform. But a .357 mag is still perfectly adequate for self defense. Magnums are more useful for animal defense because the extra power is wasted when shooting people. 9/40/45 will all get the job done, have larger magazines, and probably less recoil as well.
>revolvers are an outdated platform
What other kind of handgun will shoot magnum loads? You have a special snowflake auto pistol that shoots .357 and 10mm. Anything shoot .44? .41? etc
.357 is probably the best handgun cartridge out there. You can load it to whatever you want, it has a long history of killing, far better ballistics etc.
fuck dude even entry teams begged S&W to make the R8 because automatics were shit and the slide would slap the shield and knock it out of battery.
Good thing my HD is a 5 inch barrel 44 magnum
>crashing this ear drum
>with no surv-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>responds by saying "with modern powders and bullet designs the magnum cartridges are a thing of the past"
This is the leading edge of the new 9mm fanboy caliber wars.
First they said "9mm may be a little weaker than 40/45/whatever, but superior capacity more than makes up for it"
Now they're claiming "9mm is literally just as lethal as 40/45/whatever"
And the next step is for them to claim that "mm is even just as good as magnum rounds".
It's driven by a feeling of insecurity, and no matter how much they circlejerk and shitpost, the insecurity never goes away, causing them to make wilder and wilder claims.
You also see the same thing with AR15 fanboys who claim that the AR15 is the most reliable gun ever.
> not asking the robber to wait 7 seconds to put in hearing protection
No that's fine for HD. I use one for that exact purpose. But be aware you will sustain hearing loss if you fire it inside. One of the reasons I'm looking into a suppressed HD gun. But the .357 is still a great cartridge with a lot of power and accuracy. What's the problem?
>not loading .45 Super to 260 grain 1000fps
This may surprise you, anon, but not all guns are designed with the military and law enforcement as the metric. Revolvers are not outdated in the context of the civilian shooter and if you stopped trying to be an oper8r for five seconds and look at the logical upsides and downsides to each type of weapon, you might see why revolvers still sell in high numbers.
> .357mag wheelgun
Reload like breeze after respectable amount of practicing. drop man like it was made to drop man ever since its creation. Shoot through glass and car door then kill the target and continue to exit through another car door. Can load saboted rifle bullet (perhaps ss109 or black tip) for special penetrating purpose such as defeating body armor or shooting engine block and have its reliability intact.
Outdated and obsolete only to retards faggots.
Not outdated but it certainly has some impressive competitors. Depends on what you want. If you would rather a smaller number of shots with less chance of failure (albeit catastrophic failure when it happens) but more force behind them, then revolvers are the choice for you. I personally like the ol' lever gun, wheel gun combo. Share ammo between the two.
>hurr durr muh magnum
And as I pointed out, you don't need those magnum cartridges for shooting at people anyway
Revolvers are great (I own a .44 mag) but there are better platforms for self defense, .357 mag is great but it isn't available on the better self defense platforms.
Please get madder though.
>what is cover?
>what are dindus on drugs?
.357 is a pretty reliable manstopper and has been for years. If someone wants to use it, they aren't "wrong." This is a huge problem in this community: my opinion has to be right and therefore there is no room for personal preference.
Fucking shoot whatever ammo you like already unless it's a meme caliber, which I wouldn't exactly call .357 Mag.
Agreed with the better options being 9mm +P+ in hollow point, 10mm in hollow point, .45 super in hollow point, 44-40, .45 colt, .38 super, .44 mag using Buffalo Bore Deer Grenades, .50 Action Express, .475 Linebaugh, govt 45-70, and .375 JDJ
You can get a Coonan 1911 cambered in .357 magnum and it's not a special .357 mag just the regular one that loads into a revolver. Also you have the Desert Eagle which gives you three excellent mag cartridges to choose from .357 mag, .44 mag, and .50 Action Express
Except they're fuckhuge and ergonomically ridiculous because they're trying to fit a revolver round into an automatic action. I've fired both of these as well as a 686 and a Rhino and I can tell you that while .357 is fun out of an automatic, it's not ideal in comparison to firing them out of a revolver. These rounds were designed for a revolver and that's where they work best.
His powder argument is stupid unless he specifically said one cartridge is greater than the other because its more efficient/has more case volume. Its true that bullets have come a long way but the 357 mag covers more ground than other pistol cartridges, very much so when used in a carbine. Also load all your pistol reloads hot. They cannot do what a 357 magnum offers.
This is 100% true.
Trips not even required.
I hold to my theory that most young gun enthusists on this board have been warped by a childhood of playing Pokemon. Nothing against your game, but everyone here just "compares states" to define the best gun/caliber/etc.
No one ever talks about the last class they took, their IDPA rank, or their practice habits to increase their speed and accuracy.
Nope, just armchair theorycrafting and an increasing attachment to their gun of choice.
I wish you guys would put more energy into believing in yourselfs, and less time debating your gun stats.
People here literally believe that they are not properly armed with a 357 magnum, a glock 22, or 1911.
I never said he was wrong, what I said was that .357 mag was perfect adequate but better options exist (mostly due to .357 mag only being available on sub optimal platforms). I said revolvers are an outdated platform for self defense because they are, that doesn't mean that theyre ineffective.
>shooting through cover
Youre probably doing something wrong.
and here is the obligatory
>hurr stoppan powah
this is stupid, how many rounds you need to kill someone? well depending on how you shoot, if you feel comfortable with having onlu 6 shots its fine, i dont, i like the hi cap magazines and having another close to me if i know im gonna be in troble just to be sure. in a room it will give you tinitus for life for sure. any caliber is apt to kill someone, just some calibers do it slowly, therefore the shotgun and supersonic rounds are the best to one shot one kill, and talking about the handgun rounds theyre all the same except for extremly low power cartiges, theres a study on that ill post it
Lolno, large diameter lead monoliths like what you would load in a .45-70 will splatter on a rifle plate. You want high velocity for dealing with armor. In any event if you've got guys with rifle plates attacking your house you should probably reevaluate your life choices. Lighter armor can be defeated with a carbine chambered in a non meme caliber like 5.56 nato or 7.62xanything
>not saying you're wrong buy you're wrong
How is, say, a 686 "suboptimal" in all situations unless you are calling something globally wrong? I can think of a lot of options where a .357 revolver would be optimal. Maybe the problem isn't the "platform."
the shock from the impact could damige internal organs even if not penetrates the body, even could brake some ribs and when the broken ribs are in the chest it could be extreamly dangerous, in most of the cases that will stop the agressor
and in the "spraying led situation" from a plate in the chest of the agressor (who enters a home with a plate? are you living in a moovie?) you will not want to be in the agressors body cause the lead that sprayed all over it just sprayed in your face ruing your vision and making you an easy target
I said it wouldn't pen (short for penetrating) but the 45-70 has a lot of energy and would feel much like getting a sledge hammer swung at you where as the other round would still have an effect just not as much as the 45-70
Wait are there people that have a light on their HD gun? Why? You're just announcing your presence and lighting up the area for the criminal when the one advantage you have is knowing the exact house layout.
Also, get an R8 if you want railz on a revolver.
There are still cops that carry .357mags if there department allows. Not many though.
The .357mag was originally designed for LE. Back when cars were built more like tanks, cops needed a round with more penetration than the .38spl could provide.
Probably 10. Unfortunately nearly all .22lr handguns have around 10 rd mags, even if they are large enough to hold more rounds. I'm confident my Buckmark could hold more and still have the mag flush with the grip.
I keep a Ruger sp101 with federal hydroshock hollow points as my HD weapon. It has driven off home invaders from the sound of it viewing alone. .357 MAG (monkey aggression eliminator) are the best rounds for me.
.357 out dated? i still think my .455 webley round isnt out dated even tho it can't handle modern powders. Only shy by 100-200 fps for a fat 230 grain of bullet compared to .45 acp. still gets the job done
Armchair commandos don't prepare and or try to practice so it can take them awhile. Fucking stupid that people go "WHAT! YOU WOULD USE EARPRO IF SOMEONE BROKE IN?!" Yes fuccboi, I like hearing things and I'm not using my mossberg without earpro.
>implyinging 6 rounds is sufficient
>implying Jamal won't bring Tayshawn and Tyrone
>implying overpenetration doesn't exist
>implying you can suppress a .357 s&w
>implying muh stoppan powah
>implying both OP and his friends aren't fags who jerk each other off
Well, let's see. My first gun was a .357 revolver. I have been using a .357 revolver for several years. I shoot best with my .357 revolver. I have hand loaded rounds specifically designed for self-defense in my .357 revolver.
So in my specific SITUATION, what do you think would be a good idea for me to go with with in a self-defense scenario, anon?
Yes, .357 was designed for LE - 80 years ago. That doesn't negate my point at all. It's branched out JUST A BIT since then and is widely considered one of the most versatile handgun rounds in the world.
Well that would be valid except that .22 LR has between 100 and 200 ft lbs of force wheras .357 Magnum has 600 - 800. So I guess what I'm trying to say here is that you're a faggot desu.
>I can't think of a good argument so time to start calling people faggots and acting like a weeabo!
.357 will get the job done, but it doesnt make sense to have so fewer rounds when 9, .40. and .45 can do the same thing.
And you just compared .22 Long Rifle to .357 Magnum. Are you absolutely sure you should be accusing others of bad argumentation? Just give it some thought.
so if capacity is the most important thing why did you tell your friend to ditch the 22? shit just get something capable of accepting a bx-25 and youre good to go right?
What is thousand pounds of muzzle energy in a pocket pistol?
What's wrong with setting the couch on fire? If your going to shoot someone then follow up with a stab to the gut having the room lit with a cracking fire so you can look at them slowing dying with a look of horror as they just realized they fucked with the wrong person is just par for the course
Why does it seem like everyone on /k/ thinks if you shoot a mag inside you'll lose your hearing for life or get tinnitus? I'm not saying it won't damage your hearing at all, but if you only shoot a couple rounds you'll be fine.
