They try to instill in you during bootcamp that you are way better than any soldier will ever be, that you do more with less and yadda yadda yadda they basically force a superiority complex on you so that you FEEL like being called a soldier is a bad thing. Civilians in the UK have no concept of differences in branches of the armed forces unless there is a film or TV series about them. I didn't learn any of the history of the royal marines until I was preparing to join, some astounding acts of selflessness and heroism. School history lessons aren't about being proud in England they are just about inherited guilt. So I can see why many civilians wouldn't want to bother doing any reserch of their own - despite all the effort their grand and great grandparents put in. Literally see people using war memorials in the UK as chairs or a source of bronze to steal. I think if you had more of a concept of what your forefathers fought for, you would have more respect for serving soldiers, stupid as they may seem.
