I don't want to give spoilers away, but I think in the end it was an apology, especially with the Jewish guy's story, as it really deviated from the main story, in my opinion. Jews only made up a small percentage of the population, and even fewer were friends with German soldiers. They had to include it for the sake of political correctness. Can you imagine a series just on German soldiers on the Eastern Front fighting the scourge of the "Worker's Paradise" (Soviet Union) without the Jew character? It would have been outrageous in Germany. The main theme of the story was "look how awesome it was, but then when things turned bad we abandoned our ideals, and because we lost the war, our ideals were wrong." In the modern world, there will never be a truly accurate depiction of the German soldier on the Eastern Front, because if there was, it would show that Germany was right in invading the Soviet Union.

An attempt to shed the romanticized lens through which we view war and the warrior. I felt it showed how the politics and and grudges of an older generation affected he next and effectively tore them apart.

I browse both forums because I understand that politics and weapons go hand in hand. One is practically useless/meaningless without the other.

When someone asks an opinion of something, I'm not going to hold back because it might be perceived as /pol/ish. I'm an National Socialist, and I like weapons too. Sorry if I hurt your precious sensibilities.

One small thing I like about it is the gunshots are nice and loud, not the usual Hollywood pew pew pew noises.

The singer and the jewish guy's sections were I guess necessary, but I think it might have been improved if they were removed.

I watched the whole thing and the documentary for it on BBC.
I thought it was great except for the forced propaganda in the last 25 minutes on the last episode.
Also in the documentary it was very clear that its just a mash up of events that dont play together in those times this series is trying to represent..
Its just good TV and nothing more.

The leader is pretty nice at the end because he implies that he would normally just shoot him but that he's a comrade who has fought with him so he lets him go.

And correspondant Osmar White describes in his book Conquerors' Road how when the Americans invaded germany, the germans quite happily stated that they where nazis. Something that turned increasingly scarce as the germans realized what GIs thought of nazis.

What strikes me about all these pictures and paintings of WW2 soldiers is they all had extremely strong noses.

It's definitely worth watching, but it's got its problems. A little pretentious at times, the voice overs are pretty hokey, and there are a few scenes requiring more than the actors involved can deliver. This is especially true of the younger brother. His little rage sessions were laughable.

It smells of some heavy-handed political correctness here and there, but I'll let someone else touch that one.

That said, it's definitely worth watching. The perspective is one Americans just don't know well enough, and it does a brutal job of driving home the effects of war: disillusionment, combat fatigue, and all the greatest hits. What really hit me is just how fucking helpless most of the characters are in their situations. They have little to no control over the causes they think they're fighting for. By the end of the series, every last one of them are literally struggling just to stay alive, and a few have killed non-combatants just to see another sunrise. It's heavy shit.

It's probably one of the better war series out there, and I'd have no problem putting considering it for a top ten list of WWII films.
