With organized leadership, you wind up with structured organizations. When you get that structure, you wind up driving away the people who just want to carry guns, drink beer, and shoot at practice targets.

The way I see our current militia working is that any civilian who fights will pretty much be cannon fodder without grouping up at rally points and going through basic training by the regular army officers. Sort of like third world places we go to and train up locals to do some of the fighting.

As a concept, not entirely. In rural areas where small law enforcement agencies have to cover a lot of territory, there would definitely be some use for them.
