Shot both 9 and 45 last week. Barely felt any difference.

Depends on the composition and size of the firearm. Heavier soaks up more recoil (F=ma). How the weight is distributed matters too.

.45 isn't as high velocity as 9mm either, and has a softer recoil impulse. 9mm is "snappier"

I've shot both as well and had a full sized .40 as my first handgun, can handle them just fine. Was genuinely surprised by how much a little rental .380 subcompact kicked though (not sure what make and model, my buddy just rented it to let his gf try it out before he bought her a piece and told me to try a mag through it)
