No. The gas system is what operates the the self-loading mechanism. That gas pushes a piston that pushes a rod that pushes the bolt back and throws a cartridge out of the gun so that the bolt can come forward again and scoop up a new cartridge on its way.

The velocity should be the same as the regular rifle. The sawed off versions aren't supposed to be accurate. A lot of them were made when regular people couldn't afford pistols (they were usually for officers) so they had to find other ways to get concealable weapons.

The velocity would have to drop. A carbine like an M44 or Type 53 is about 200 FPS slower than a 91/30. This would be probably 300-400 FPS slower than that.

I don't know why, but for some reason gangland shootings with rifles generally involve a rifle with the stock cut into something resembling a pistol grip that is then hidden down the pant-leg. The reason gangsters where baggy clothes is so they don't print.

I want to say that's ridiculous, but today I saw a clip of a Colorado state senator claiming that banning further production of hi-cap mags will mean that eventually all the hi-cap mags in circulation will get shot up, because mags are not reusable and you buy them with the ammunition in them and dispose of them when they're empty.
