DCS. It's an amazing simulator, but it's got some kinks that come part and parcel with such huge and complex games. For example, I landed on this boat and hung out there for a few seconds, when suddenly it decided it wanted to burst into flames.

Apparently flight sims like DCS are pretty good reference points for actual piloting. I'm trying to go to flight school for the Army to fly Blackhawks, and when I mentioned I played flight sims they told me that gave me an edge over the other candidates going in. I also drill with a guy who flies Cessnas, and he told me that they're actually incredibly true to life when I told him that. We went on to have an hour-long conversation about flying, and I was able to keep up with him surprisingly well with only vidya experience.

DCS World is the base game, and like I said it's apparently a good enough sim that you can talk flying with actual pilots and keep up with them.
>>
>>23269280
What does the base game come with aircraft wise and why are the dlc's so god damn expensive, what do they add?
>>
>>23269332
Just a TF-51 and an Su-25. You have to buy modules to get other aircraft, which isn't as bad as you would think, considering how masterfully crafted each individual aircraft is.
>>
>>23269516
Is there an f-18 expansion/mod? Which ones are best/should I buy to dick around with jets? And while we're on the topic, what's the best flight stick system out there, preferably one with rudder pedals and a throttle stick? Please try to keep i under 3-400$ canadian.
>>
>>23269332
Su-25 Frogfoot (non-clickable cockpit, relatively arcade flight model (although it may have been updated already, I know they're updating it soon if they haven't already.) Recently had 6DOF added to it.

TF-51D, unarmed Mustang variant, clickable cockpit, 6 DOF, advanced flight model. Basically a 'proper' module, although lacking armament.

You have to understand how much time and effort goes into these modules, and just how much depth they have. Buying the A-10C, for example, will take weeks/months to master, so it's not like you'll be churning through the modules and be finished in a week.

If I was to recommend modules, it would be A-10C for fixed wing and Huey for rotary. F15C is the only 'modern' fighter aircraft, but is lacking a clickable cockpit and advanced controls, so it's not really at the same level as the other modules, but is still worth picking up (especially as part of FC3, which nets you half a dozen aircraft)
>>
>>23269543
F-18 is being worked on.

What era jets? F86 and Mig-21 have just been released, fully fledged modules with clickable cockpits, etc.

If you want modern jets (I get the impression you're referring to modern fighters by 'jets', perhaps incorrectly), you're stuck with the A-10C, or FC3 and non-clickable cockpits.

Best stick out there is the HOTAS TM Warthog with whatever rudder set up you like (CH Products make an affordable pair). Avoid anything Saitek.

There's supposed to be an F-18 one in the works. If you're looking for fixed-wing fastmovers I strongly recommend the Flaming Cliffs DLC.

As for flight sticks, it depends on how much you're willing to spend. I have a $30 Logitech that I use as cyclic, collective and pedals all in one. It's not ideal, but I've learned how to use it and can outfly most people I meet with it. Put down $300 and you can get the THRUSTMASTER WALLET-FUCKER EXTREME, but that's a little exorbitant
>>
>>23269589
Ok, but the only price I can find for the warthog is something like 500 bucks on amazon... where the hell can I get one for a reasonable price, or is that it?

It's a Saitek product.

If you aren't going to get something like a TM Warthog or Cougar, just stick with either the 3d Pro or the Thrustmaster 16000M. I've had enough Saitek products that arrive either dead, or die within 2 weeks of extremely mild use, to know better that to recommend them.

No experience with the HOTAS X, but I've had a similar set up in the past (Black Widow?). It's really not very good. I'd just stick with the two cheap alternatives I mentioned.

DCS 2014-10-14 22-33-20-776.jpg
1MB, 1920x1080px
Picture from my first MP flight, just a couple of days ago.

3 A-10Cs taking off from the same runway, everybody's first time. Nobody died, surprisingly.

My biggest wish for DCS is for them to fix the god damned thermal imaging. As it is now, it's just post-processing the original textures. Green tanks still blend in perfectly against a green background, whether they're active or not. It's even harder to see them because of the lower resolution, at least you can see them a lot of the time through the visible spectrum because you can see the jaggies/aliasing from the 3d object (such as a tank) compared to the completely static, 2d background map.

Hard to explain, but I guess if you've played DCS (A-10C, especially, since it's a TGP simulator 80% of the time), you probably understand.

One thing I am thankful for is the fact that they didn't model the dangers of Slav runways. Western runways are the subjects of constant FOD-walks to keep foreign objects out of engines, but from what I've seen Slavs don't seem to mind a bit of FOD.

I would recommend the Saitek x52. It's the cheapest stick setup out that the can provide a HOTAS setup.

>>
>>23269965

Shit like this happens to me too, like Hellfires from AH-64s hitting my Mig-29 at low alt, or AT-6s and even cannon and machine gun hits from tanks/apcs when I'm flying my A-10.

I swear, the AI is far too accurate with those weapons.

>>23269965

>>
>>23269982
Not particularly.

Why do you think gun-runs aren't really done anymore
>>
>>23269972
>dosen't seem to be any issue with the TGP at all.

Come back when you've actually played it a decent amount, then.

TGP FLIR doesn't show thermals, it just shows (in laymans terms) massively contrasted versions of the textures. There's no heat map, men don't show up as warm, vehicles with active engines don't show up as warmer than the surrounding areas.

A dark green tank (read: every tank in DCS, since it's in Georgia) shows up as the exact same colour as the background (dark green, since it's in Georgia) through thermals, because it just increases the contrast. There's no actual heat or anything being calculated. Hot objects are more often than not, more difficult to spot through BHOT/WHOT than they are through the visible spectrum, because the thermal imaging is of a lower resolution yet doesn't make it any easier.
>>
>>23269982
It's hilarious. I've had an M4 disable my engine, and a TOW not destroy my hydraulics despite taking out my tail entirely.

DCS 2014-10-08 21-16-29-359.jpg
938KB, 1920x1080px
Here's an example of what I mean, although it can get much worse than pic related.

The green terrain and the green tank show up as the same 'hotness' through FLIR, since it doesn't take into account any heat, just the colour of their regular textures (green in the case of the tank and the grass in this case).

Maybe not the biggest issue, but after tens of hours looking through a TGP, little things like this start to grate on you.

Playing it with M+KB is a challenge, but can be sort of rewarding. I wonder if it'd work with a controller?

Is the Huey clickable and I assume the module comes with tutorials? I don't really feel up to trial-and-erroring every bit of a fully-functional rotary bird.

I have this stick and the only real negative thing I can say about it is that for games like War Thunder I'd rather have physical pedals, but maybe that's just because WT's joystick controls suck ass.

Yes, it's clickable.

All the modules come with several in-depth tutorials, with highlighted buttons on what to press, and a voice over walking you through it. They're pretty great, actually.

I think some of the FC3 tutorials, or maybe just the SU-25 freebie, are a low resolution video, they may have changed that. All the full modules have great tutorials, though.

Pic related, just got done flying a 2 man flight a couple of minutes ago.

Guys, I have a Logitech 3D pro and while I think it's a great stick, I firmly believe that the throttle is in a god awful place. It's hard to get to when you are doing maneuvers in fixed wing or trying to precisely balance collective and cyclic in helos. I can kind of move it with my wrist, but then I can't reach my weapon controls.

I keep it on the right side of me simply because that is where it's comfortable. It's not a huge issue for ArmA because I just use Q/Z as my throttle/collective, but in DCS and FSX it's just a pain in the ass.

Anyone have any recommendations for a cheap stand alone throttle?

We're talking about DCS here, guy, not Lock On.

I remember getting a demo of the original Lock On back in the day with a PC Gamer magazine, goofing with it for a little while, and returning to Jane's F-15.

Oh, to be 13 and have the sweetest gaming rig ever, with a powerhouse Pentium II processor and badass Voodoo 5 chipset again.
>>
>>23273232
FC3 is descended from Lock-On.
>>
>>23273284
And it's in DCS
>>
>>23273128

I never used that joystick. What does force feedback exactly do?

I always thought they used these fancy motors and cost thousands of dollars and only used for hardcore diy home cockpits.
>>
>>23273294
Yes, but what he was saying is FC3 has very simple flight models.
>>
>>23273334

Very simple avionics modeling maybe, but more and more FC3 planes are getting DCS-level flight modeling.

The F-15, A-10A, Su-25, and Su-25T already have it. The Su-27 is getting it in about a month (along with other upgrades such as a more realistic MFD)
>>
>>23273334
I wouldn't know, I haven't tried it. I've only bought the UH-1 module, and I'm really only interested in other rotary-wing ones.
>>
>>23273328
It rumbles like a Dualshock. He's simply saying it's hard to tell what an aircraft is doing in response to the trim you put in without some sort of physical feedback from the aircraft itself, and the old-school Force Feedback stick, which I should mention came packaged with the ever-excellent MechWarrior 3, offers that rumble.
>>
>>23273424

>only bought the UH-1 module

Thats strange, if you're so interested in helicopters wouldn't you get the Ka-50 first? It's out longer which means its more heavily discounted and I assume because its a modern attack helicopter it has more features, like MFDs and guided missiles and such.

Idk, maybe I'm just a sucker for modern tech.

Negro,

The reason that the FLIR is giving you issues is you don't have it in White-Hot mode. I forget how to do it exactly, but once you set it to WHOT it gives you a more "thermal" type of view, as in pic related
>>
>>23273578
Black hot shouldn't have that sort of problem, though. It's clearly a bug.
>>
trackir: worth? should i stick to my trusty hat switch?

This. You set it using boatswtich up for WHOT and boatswitch down for BHOT while your TGP is SOI, I believe.

If I had $200 burning a hole in my pocket, I'd go for it.

Hell, for $1000 you could build an entire cockpit for all your flight simulating needs.

So long as you're using disposable income and not like say, your rent or food money, then hell yes.

Playing DCS with a trackir vs just using a hat switch is like flying with mouse and keyboard vs an actual joystick, without a trackir it just feels so clumsy and you'll wonder how you ever did it before.
>>
>>23273667
I wonder if Oculus will be as effective as TrackIR when it gets to consumer version.
>>
>>23273601

It says "CCD" in the upper right of the MFD, and in my pic here>>23273578
you can see it says "WHOT"

what's the difference between the two? From page 322 of the DCS A-10C manual

>The targeting pod provides you the ability to view, track, or designate targets day or night. There are three live video modes: Charge Coupled Device (CCD) (similar to a TV display) and Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) in both Black Hot and White Hot modes
>>
So, gents, I found my old copy of Jane's F-15. Should I reinstall it and deal with the fuckery of getting an old game running on a new(ish) rig, or is it on Steam?

Also, does GOG.com offer builds of its games that run on new computers? I've never used GOG.com before, but if I can't get it running and it's not on Steam, I'd be willing to bet it was there.
>>
>>23273715

As far as I can tell, Oculus rift has 1:1 head motion which means that in normal gameplay you'll get a sore neck from looking around JUST LIKE REAL PILOTS.

I think it'll be preferable to a trackir, but its also many times more expensive.
>>
>>23273738
Ah. My only experience with a FLIR is a bulky-ass TWS I ostensibly carried around to mount on my 240, or to pull watch with. The thing is, if you want to mount it you need to zero it, and it eats about 8 AA batteries for every 30 minutes of use, so it's really not practical.
>>
>>23273715
It would probably be better, but you would probably need to take out a loan and use your eternal soul as collateral to afford one.
>>
>>23273738
Gotta love how they just HAVE to throw another acronym in there for just fucking "Normal" TV view.
>>
>>23273778
>it eats about 8 AA batteries for every 30 minutes of use
holy fuck.
>>
>>23273807
You can see why it never left my assault pack.

Another thing they don't cover in vidya is how much neckpain you get from extended NOD use, or the loss of depth perception they give you, for that matter.

I'm assuming pilot NODs are better in that regard.

At least I hope they are.

My bad, all the TGP images look exactly the same, since FLIR does absolutely nothing, so I picked the wrong one.

The reason your image has any contrast whatsoever is because the road is grey, and the car is a greenish colour, so ofcourse there's going to be contrast, like I've already explained in the previous post and you clearly ignored.

You aren't going to argue out of the fact that there are no heat maps in the files, the 'FLIR' is just post-processed images of the original textures.
