Should I buy a knife, trench tool and ax or could I just buy a knife and one of those trench tools with the serrated edges? I'm not going to be chopping down trees or anything but it would be for taking off tree limbs and such. I figure I can split wood by bayoneting the knife.

This is not recommended, it ends with you breaking the knife and cutting your own femoral artery.

If your taking off limbs a trench tool, machete, tomahawk/ hatchet or kukri would work. An axe is probably a bit much to be carrying around.

I bring my LK35 innawoods whenever I go and it's comfy

My only complaint is that it's just one big pocket so you have to dig if you want something, but other than that it's comfy, it holds a lot, it's cheap, and it doesn't scream tacticool.

The LK35 carries significantly less than an alice large and has worse organization than both. It also has lash points on the top and bottom which is more convenient for attaching a sleeping bag and ground cover, however the alice's huge robust compression straps allow you to strap a tent, a sleeping bag, a ground cover, three rifles, and a bear can easily, it's just more annoying to actually get things out of the pack once you do.

The LK35 is a bit more comfortable as long as you don't move your arms around a lot and get pinched by the frame.

Here in WA I can bring my AR innawoods and if anyone asks I'm hunting coyotes. Coyotes exist in all of washington's bio areas so it works in every forest.

it's more that the alice shoulder straps and kidney pads are shitty than the pack frame or pack themselves.
find a frame, pack, and molle ii shoulder straps/kidney pad and you can have an okay pack for ~50USD if you look around funshows and swap meets, much more than that and better stuff starts to be available to you around the same price point. if you can find a reasonable priced used commercial pack they will usually be lighter and more comfortable than milsurp but anytime you're buying used inspect it thoroughly. fwiw some militaries have started moving towards beefed up commercial packs in camouflage for their rucks, the ILBE would be one example of this, iirc it's a licensed Arcteryx Bora 90 or 95 in marpat made by propper. it's a good comfortable design but supposedly sucked to wear over armor whereas the old alice did not. go figure.

I own one and love it, here's a bit of copy pasta I saved from another thread on which is better


The insides are roughly the same with the LK being a bit deeper. While ALICE packs have the added modularity with the ALICE clip system and external pouches; the design of the kidney belt and straps leaves much to be desired. The frame also lacks attachment points, while the frame can be detached from the ruck to carry other items (with a cargo shelf bough separately) the LK35 has one built it with the pack deataching in seconds. In comparison the LK35 lacks kidney straps (later models have them) and its current straps are very minimal with less padding than ALICE straps but it makes up for this by having a unmatched build quality.

TL;DR LK35 is a blank pallet to build off of and it's idiot proof, ALICE packs suited for those who like to make additions yet the market for upgrades has already peaked

Both require some level of upgrading to be made comfortable and suitable for long term use

I own camp hatchets and axes. If I'm building a large shelter, Ill strap them to my pack and use it. But most the time I use a kukri that I won from a bug out contest from Cold Steel. (They actually make good machetes)
Less is more for me, so if I can have a good knife that can handle every aspect of cutting, then I'll use that.

I was camping recently and handled all the firewood chopping, cutting quartered pine/maple logs down to chopstick sized bits with a Estwing hatchet. They're cheap and they work but are heavy so something pricier will serve you even better. For wood processing you want a dedicated tool. Saw wise you shouldn't be cutting wood off of trees anyways, its green and wont burn well/ at all, Buy a folding pruning saw if you need to cut dead wood to length.

Grey man doesn't apply to innawoods. In an actual SHTF situation you won't be trying to blend in with other people innawoods you'll just be avoiding them, and camo helps there.

Thats why I have "high profile" gear that is camo, and "low profile" gear that will blend in with other people, I can keep the high profile gear in the trunk of my car or something as I'm bugging out.

Absolutely. If you've heard of ALICE Hellcat mods then you'd figure with less attachment points than the LK35 it'd certainly be doable, if not much easier, with MOLLE straps.

I still can't decide between a plastic frame alice medium hellcat in all woodland and a eberlestock G2 in multicam.

I like my alice large for it's capacity and organization, so if I got the G2 I would put molle pouches all over the outside in the same pattern that an ALICE's pockets are to replicate my current user experience. That would make it even more expensive vs the hellcat that is only 160.

But it also has built in hydration support and the rifle carrier. I don't know if I can bring myself to open carry in the woods without the rifle carrier to make me seem non threatening. Maybe I"m just a pussy and I need to just get my permit to hunt coyotes and use that as my excuse.

What I do for more space on the outside is strap a fanny-pack to either side, straps are longs enough to weave through the frame and the plastic buckle make it easy to remove or move around.

Pic related, its one of the hip-packs I use on my LK35.

I modded the woodland bivvy to include mosquito netting by chopping up an old Boy Scout mosquito net and sewing velcro to it and the bag. Works pretty good.

Depends on what skills you have. The biggest problem I see with it is that most people will want to bring a tent with them, or a sleeping bag, and there is honestly no reasonable way to attach that kind of shit to an ILBE assault pack.

However, if you're open to hammock camping, that could be more feasible. You can get a fancy-pants hammock that comes with a rain fly (but let's be honest, if you're trying to innawoods with just an ILBE assault pack, you're probably not spending the money on that), or you can bring a tarp with you and set that up over the hammock. you'll still need padding/insulation below you to stay anywhere near warm though.

For camping I use a Cabelas Alaskan Guide 6-man tent, (with wall-to-wall carpeting)
a Cabelas Lounge cot and either my old mid-weight Boy Scout nylon/flannel sleeping
bag or a heavy canvas/flannel bag (I've pinned both together with safety pins for deer
hunting in Michigan during Nov).

I see no point in being uncomfortable when camping.

For a bug-out bag on the other hand, the military modular system can be doable and it's

Sorry guys I still dont get the point of carrying useless shitty gear for 3-5 days... regardless of how you want to pack that shit.... Ok horses for courses I suppose ... Im coming from a practicality viewpoint as I as Im innawoods a fair bit ..... I get the milsurp feels though .... just not enough to carry x4 the weight if actually covering some ground...
