Really though, as a non-white looking at it all from the outside, I think the fact that for so long we have been for the most part culturally homogenous has led most white Americans to think of being white as "normal". If you're not white, you're not like most people, you're not normal. Both liberals and conservatives have this subconscious idea, even if they don't ever realize it, and if somebody doesn't look very white, they won't be seen as white, or "regular". There's not necessarily a prejudice, it's just noticing a difference from the norm.

Hell, even I look at white people, then people of my own race, and I think of whites as "regular", because I'm an American, and in America it is most normal to be white. People think of "Americans" as white, just as they think of us as protestants, cowboys, blond-haired, or whatever.
