I understand that .308 is to 7.62x51 as 5.56 is to .223 and that it's generally not smart to use .308 in rifles chambered for the real fuckin' NATO cartridge, but are Mausers exempt from this? I've read that the Mauser action is chambered for higher pressures and that it should be okay. Thoughts?
The rifle I'm talking about in particular is an Israeli VZ 24 reworked by FN and rebarelled by Israel, according to the seller.

In the case of your Mauser, and other 98s, it's fine. It was designed for 8mm so you're good.
But some 96 or 93 mausers converted to 762 can slowly show signs of wear after firing hundreds of 308.

I'm fucking tired edition.
We got one meetup coming, and, you guessed it, it's another Panoche meet. Here's how it'll be going down:
Date: August 26th-28th
Address: 46378 W Panoche Rd, Firebaugh We'll be meeting in front of the Subway before rolling out.
Time: Try to be at the subway around 9 AM, but if you can't make that, no biggie.
If you can't make the Subway at 9, here are the directions. Continue past the Subway on W Panoche Rd, after a minute or so you will have to turn left at some agricultural buildings, the road will soon turn to dirt. Continue past the Tumey Hills BLM signs, as Tumey is still closed for fire season. You will drive over the ridge and end up in a valley, continue driving until you see on your right a large, circular parking area. This is the area where we will be setting up and shooting.

It seems like body armor has become very effective at stopping bullets fired from man handleable weapons, and is probably made even more effective by the advent of powered armor in the near future.
Ceramic plates, steel of high hardness etc. can stop anything that's not tungsten carbide core, and even still it's difficult.
This kind of armor is rather commonplace and not that expensive in non 3rd world countries and is commonplace in manyarmies.
They are to protect the combatant, but the enemy is also outfitted with similar armor, giving them similar capacity to kill you.
In this case offense seems like the best defense. But modern propellants seem to be limited in their ability to send the projectile at sufficient velocities to defeat thick armor steel or ceramics. Only solution today looks to be very expensive, very difficult to machine tungsten carbide bullets. And railguns, pulsed lasers etc. are at least decades away due to insufficient batteries/capacitors and materials technology.
So, what could be done to make infantry armor obsolete again? Do assault rifles with controllable recoil and low weight have to be rendered obsolete?

Depends on what you mean as 'obsolete.' If you mean what I think you mean, then DEW's will probably make it obsolete, in that wearing body armor will literally only ever slow you down, and won't protect you against the weapon in question.
After that, probably man-portable railgun tech. The kinetic energy will simply be too high - even if the armor isn't penetrated, the conservation of energy would be high enough to cause severe trauma in the user.

Very. However, it probably wont be China first striking the US. Most likely it will be China attacking a US ally (phillipines, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea) forcing the US to respond militarily. China has little interest in fighting anyone. What it is interested in is being taken seriously and supplying its future.
They still have a few decades of growth before they are fully developed, by that stage they will be resource hungry and have already cemented their claim to the SCS.
The US will never act first in regards to resource exploitation of the SCS. Their primary concern is merchant traffic - which China has no reason to prevent. China knows that the US leadership is constantly worried about reelection so decisive action is unlikely.
Once china is close to fully developed, say in 2040-50, they will have a population of ~1.5bn and their primary concern will be resources, this makes a conflict with Russia far more likely due to the embarrassment of riches in poorly defended Siberia.

Have you ever had a gun stolen from your property? I took my CCW off to enter my favorite gun free zone, and when I got back to my (still locked) car, my gun was missing from my center console. The cops just left my place, they got my serial number and info and searched my entire vehicle, but came up empty as well.
