You can shorten it a little, but the overall length must remain at least 26 inches, and the barrel length at least 16 inches, as per the US National Firearms Act of 1934.
As long as you don't go below those limits, it's a legal firearm.
If you go below it, you'll need a tax-paid registration from the BATFE, which will run you about $200 and require a background check.

range is okay if you make it on a weekday during morning or afternoon hours. I'm generally the only one there, sometimes there's two or three others there though. It sucks to drive 30 minutes both ways but what can I do, I live in a city with a no shoot ordinance and don't know anyone with property 500ft from someone's house
