Been looking to buy a gun for a while. Army dada recommended a m4 or ak, told me he would teach me how to use either one of them. I've only ever shot a .22 and am looking to buy a cheap gun just to get me started $800~ range

Has everything you need to get started. Upgrading in the future means you don't have to go through the process of dealing with an FFL since you now have a lower receiver to slap new parts and uppers on.

Hey /k/, so I just bought a Ruger American Predator, and since it's my first rifle, I'm wondering if I should clean it, before firing. It seems to have a lot of oil, where oil starts leaking out of the bolt stop if I just cycle the action. Also, threaded barrel cover, was overflowing with oil when I first opened it and looks like pic related now
TL;DR Bought a 308 Ruger Predator, and barreled action is super oily and it can easily smear to stock and scope

It's just wrapping to facilitate gripping the weapon. It's an aesthetic choice though. Not much reason for it to be there.

So let me start this by saying that I've only recently got my own place in South Carolina. Keep that in mind when recommending things to buy and modifications to make.

Anyways, I'm not a novice with firearms, and I've shot many in my time. However, whenever I moved out I only got to keep my .22 and a 20-Gauge break action. Not really worth mentioning.
But, I'm going to inherit my grandfather's SKS soon. I have shot it before but don't have many specific details to offer.
Any thoughts, suggestions, or other recommendations in a similar vein?

Depends on your interests and goals, what do you want from a rifle? Accuracy, Dependability, weight, balance, Fun, and other factors should be included in your decision. If you have any LGS, and you do, go to them and finger fuck all the rifles you see, then research the ones you like.
