4" ish is the best general purpose revolver barrel length in my mind. Perfect balance of performance to handy-ness.

If you are buying a revolver for a specific purpose (ie CCW, hunting etc) your needs may dictate a different ideal barrel length.

.44mag hunting is best done with a lever gun. The caliber is actually usable on large game out of a 16"+ barrel within ~150yd. I'd go 4"-6", so for the Redhawk in particular that means 4.2" or 5.5".
