oldfag /noguns/ here, long time lurker.

I'm a field biologist. I often work alone in the back country, and feel it may be time to pick up a little protection against the random cougar/hillbilly i've had the pleasure of coming across recently. Not really planning on ever shooting AT someone/thing, but a flashy piece and a loud bang would be a deterrent to most things i'm concerned with. Was thinking about Glock 17, but am now leaning more toward Beretta 92FS. Opinions?

Also curious on rifles as my life would like to practice up (she bow hunts). Tikka X3 or CZ527?

We're in California.

>tl;dr /nogun/ wants to change, best pistol/hunting rifle suggestions.

Thanks boys.

>not planning on shooting at anything

You need to change that mentality. One of the fundamental rules of gun safety is not to point it anything you're not willing to destroy.

You could up getting the gun taken from and used against you, or you could get in legal hot water for brandishing a firearm threateningly, especially if you don't consider yourself to be in enough danger to shoot your assailant.
>>
The glock and beretta are both solid options. Everyone will have their own opinions but youll be fine with either
>>
California has a handgun roster limiting you to a few specific models, most of which are absolute crap for backwoods defense. Open carry is illegal in much of the state and many counties will refuse to give concealed carry permits. You're basically fucked.

So I know that it's possible for anti-material rifles to disable a tank's tracks, but I have no idea how much of a feat that is, or what it involves. Does this only apply to light tanks?
Would it work on an M1A1? Are you trying to sever the treads? Damage a wheel? How many on-target shots would you expect it to take?
17 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
you know when you think about it a tank basically IS an anti-material rifle (or shotgun, rather)
>>
>>33553147
There's basically no modern anti material rifles.

Unless we're talking shoulder mounted recoiless rifles like the Gustav.

In which case it will take out more than just the track.

Maybe, but track's aren't what someone using an anti material rifle should be aiming for on a MBT

Optical equipment is far more valuable than tank treads, which are easily repaired, you can't just stick a new Thermal Imaging camera on in the field.

Most modern armies train their crewmen to be able to operate the vehicle with advanced optics and worst case scenario, to go old school with your mark 1 eyeballs.

That's the idea, but I would expect many of those crewmen to become complacent, and taking out advanced optics will severely hinder the capability of the crew to spot, identify and hit targets.

Just hope you're not targeting a particularly ally tank crew who just love to binoc it

Hello. I live in the state of Massachusetts, and thus my options are rather limited when it comes to getting a semi-auto rifle. I think I have narrowed it down to either the Mini 14 or the SKS. Anyone have recommendations, or experience with either or both of these rifles? How do Russian, Chinese, and Yugo SKSs compare to one another?

>>
>>33551866
I have owned both, and if I had to pick only one it would be the Mini-14. Far lighter, detachable magazines, available in stainless, etc.
>>
Mini-14. Full-capacity magazines are just a road trip up I-93 or I-95 to the New Hampshire malls away.
