I'm pretty sure it did serve in civil war. Other than that it suffered major issues, the gun powder would leak a lot in field conditions from the paper and hotgas also leaked. The question "is X a good gun" will always be dependant on the intended use.
For duty/home defence, yes. I CC one and it is a bit of a chore. I will get a 92 compact at some point, but it is still a thick pistol.
