So I've gotten to know the differences between the two rounds over he past month or so and how they work. I was wondering why certain nations choose one round over the other for their AKs. Is Russia the only one using 5.45? And is 5.56 conversions for an AK a decent idea by the /pol/acks?

Russia isn't the only country using 5.45. Romania, Bulgaria, and the former E. Germany have used that caliber. Poland isn't the only country that makes 5.56 AKs, China and former Yugoslavia have also build them. As for the majority of countries that still use 7.62x39, it's pretty much a matter of they don't have the funding to retool their manufacturing process along with the fact that 7.62x39 works for what they need it for so they don't see any need to switch over.

Slightly related. I'm looking to bulk order some 7.62x39s and am looking for a decent, somewhat accurate round for a decent price (no Tulashit). Somewhere around 1,000 rounds per $200. Currently looking at Pic related for $200 + 20 shipping. What do /k/

5.45 is superior to 7.62

Hey /k/,
I'm looking at some different .308 mags for my Howa 1500 that is having AICS compatible bottom metal installed.
So far my options are:
- Accurage Mag
- AICS branded
- Magpul PMAG 7.62

Maypul is about half the price, but I'm unsure of how it'll compare as plastic to the steel mags.

Can anyone comment? Would really appreciate it.

Accurate mag will allow for the longest coal of the bunch and is a good mag.
AICS is a known standard, and you'll pay for it, but theyll work as intended.
Magpul is obviously cheaper, but they have thicker dimensions since they use polymer and not metal. As a result you have a much shorter coal for reloading purposes, and if my memory is correct its right at SAAMI spec and not much more.

If you're not loading ammo yourself then pick up the magpul and save some money, but if you are going to reload then take your pick from aics or accurate mag
>>
>>33747445
The difference between AICS and Accurate Mag is $10 (or $30 for the three I intend to buy, which is effectively nothing given they'll be used for a loooong time and can be used on other rifles).

Which would recommend between the two?

Might be the right place to ask, but how good was the Mk III and Mk IV helmet compared to the German and American helmets of WWII?

Not too good
The design was pretty good for trench warfare though
>>
>>33747295
Not great. The wide rim of the Mk. III and IV was an artifact of WWI. The reason the Brodie looked the way it did was simple: it didn't protect against bullets it protected against shrapnel and debris from artillery. When you're in a trench that about the only thing that can kill you.

Problem is when the world moved to WWII and mobilization became more necessary for victory trench warfare and Brodie style helmets became obsolete. That in addition to the fact that as more SMGs entered the field the amount of rounds stopped by helmets increased dramatically.

Although realistically helmets aren't worn to stop bullets. They're worn to stop head injury. Same reason they're worn on a construction site. The Mk. III and IV just don't do that as well as the stahlhelm or M1. Not to mention the fact they're a liability to those around you. I mean hell ask a couple hundred thousand men to walk around with a half meter disc on their head and there's going to be problems.

What are some firearms like the KS-23 23mm pump-action shotgun which are designed to punish the user and bruise your bracing shoulder or cause other forms of injury? Or weapons that are heavy/punishing to use in general.

Why did it take European settlers on the US landmass almost 300 years (early 1600's through the 1890's) to successfully subdue the scattered native tribes, despite their vast technological and military advantages?
36 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>>33746746

Because the white population was small, and had plentiful resources, with no major motive to expand,
and because the natives massively outnumbered them.

In 1622, natives killed a third of the entire white population of Virginia.
Which amounted to about 400 people.
>>
Because generally when you march a couple thousand people into an environment that they've never fought in before to kill off the people who have lived their entire life in that area with the assumption that it will really easy because they're brown and act kinda funny, you are probably going to get your shit pushed in.
>>
>>33746791
Exactly, demonstrated today in the demographics of the United States, where the primary population is Native and they hold the power.

Post weapons/knives you're ashamed/embarassed that you bought

I paid like $20 or $30 for this at an anime convention years ago because I thought it looked cool, and the salesman did a heck of a job impressing me with it. Later I found out that I don't really carry a knife with me, and I wasted money on something I'll never use. To this day it's still sitting in my room, I've never taken it in public with me because I'm too embarrassed to brandish it, let alone use it. I mean, I do like anime/weeb looking stuff, but I never realized I'd be embarrassed to show it off in public.

Also for the record I'm pretty sure it's made of garbage steel, might be equal to a knife you could buy at a gas station for $10.

Lol, I got the exact same knife when I was into edgy shit knives. I think it might have even been the first one I got. It was like 8 bux on amazon.
>>
>>33746624
I got this one when I was like 17 or some shit, I'm 24 now but I'm just embarrassed that I paid money for it. I don't know why I still have it, like I just don't want to throw it out because it's basically brand new. I just simply have better knives and don't want to use that one, frankly I'd give it away for free to someone if I had a friend or somebody who wanted it.

What guns have you saved? Pic related is my sks that I haven't shot in many years because the aftermarket mags were so bad. Finally bit the bullet and spent the $45 on a replacement.
Still need to get the gas tube cover off; been trying to do that for a long time but the pin is fucked from the previous owner. I'll be happy with the gas tube cover but to be complete it also needs a new top cover.

I don't actually have a better pic than this. Full Tapco, aftermarket mags, scope mount receiver cover.

It actually was really accurate like this, not the best scope mount but easy to shoot and grouped pretty nicely for being what I imagine was a $15 scope mount out of a Budk type magazine

Found this M1 carbine at a gun show, replaced stock, sling, and springs

How useful would old weapons like Maxim guns be in modern war?

Lets say you're a Syrian Militia group lacking in many heavy weapons, surely a Maxim, or similar old MG would do the job just as well?

Obviously more modern weapons would be better, but as long as you're throwing bullets at the enemy and keeping their heads down, it doesn't matter all too much.

It's a mathematical principle that larger objects have greater sectional density. For this reason, 5.56 mm caliber bullets rapidly lose the velocity they desperately need to compensate for their lack of size. Civilians would be wise to choose calibers big enough to be effective at range, but not so big that recoil is unbearable. A 6.5 mm rifle firing a heavy for caliber bullet seems about ideal.
