Most Americans buying an AR do so for prepping purposes. With the prevalence of cheap and effective rifle plating on the civilian and military markets and the total ineffectiveness of the 5.56 round to penetrate level III and IV armor the U.S is planning to go back to big bore power factor.
Is .308 the new 5.56?

What are your thoughts on using powerful 1W+ laser pointers for self-defense?
I have one that is strong enough to light fires and looking into the beam is over 1000x worse on a W/m^2 basis than staring at the sun.

won't incapacitate a determined attacker fast enough to stop them from killing you. definitely won't kill them.
will cause permanent eye damage, which they will no doubt use to sue you for massive damage. might also damage your own vision from the diffuse reflections.
conclusion: unsuitable for self-defense purposes. use a firearm instead.

Hi /k/, So I'm a bit of an /out/ist and enjoy traveling off the beaten path in my wrangler. I have been looking to get my first gun for a while now but since I live in California the go to of an AR is off the table since I dont want to deal with all the bullshit regulations. I want something that reliable, with a semi high ammo capacity, but also powerful. I had my sights on a .45-70 lever action but when I went into turners the guy told me It would be too expensive and I should look into buying a semi-auto 5.56 platform or a .357 lever action platform. So now I dont know really what I should get, I though about a shotgun but dont know if it offers the range or reliability I need and have been eyeing lever actions but I'm worried about ammo costs (Stupid I know). What is /k/s suggestion?

I honestly thought I was getting phished at first and was on the wrong site somehow. I've never had to do this on Ebay and other auction sites so it seems really strange. I have often heard Americans criticize Canada for not having a bigger military, and supposedly relying on the US to defend it's borders.
But no one ever says WHO we are defending against. Russia is hardly a threat with the single Bear that manages to make it off the ground and somehow to the coast of the North West Territorys once a year. North Korea is a long way away and hardly knows we exist, they might hit northern BC if their missile overshoots Alaska.
The biggest threat I can think of is the USA, in which case the canadian military is pretty much fucked no matter how many f35s we have.
so why really have a military at all?
