How are medals issued? I know ribbons are issued at the platoon level for things like good conduct and whatnot, but what about medals?
It seems that medals such as the purple heart and bone star can be issued immediately to a dying enlisted man as sort of a kind of "last rites". However any medals higher than that such as the medal of honor or distinguished service cross often take years or even decades to be awarded. Who do the medal requests go through?

I have never hunted anything larger than vermin and I am still relatively new to the gun world. I was curious if it's possible to hunt bigger game, deer, elk, etc, with something like a Mosin-Nagant or a Gewehr 98? I honestly don't know what caliber rifles are ideal for hunting bigger game, other than the .308 which is just what people tell me.

Yes, both 7.62x54R and 8x57IS are more than adequate for larger game.

Yes, but nugget hunting gets old very fast. Get something decent if (and only if) you decide to get into hunting.

I want a gun for general self defense but I'm afraid I might kill myself with it later. I think about suicide somewhat often, but not to the point where I act on it. Is this an issue for gun owners or no?

It's an issue for you.

Don't buy a fun until you get your shit straight. And be prepared to relinquish your rights if you talk to a doctor. But your health is more important.
>>
>>34096941
most people think about suicide as a way out and only think about it to kinda comfort themselves that they have a choice after all.

If you ever acted on it (and survived) or constantly speak to others about acting on it then your just doing it for attention

Get it and go to the range and be social. Sometimes interaction with people and having a hobby helps defeat some tendencies and helps you keep going.

Okay so the other day i made a thread asking what is the lightest armored vehicle mounting a "real" gun, like the Rheinmetal 120mm for example, that is still more or less impervious to small arms fire when buttoned up. All of the suggested vehicles weighed around 20 tons.

Now i was thinking how light could you actually make an armored vehicle while still mounting this full power gun? Probably the best approach would be to have the cannon be fixed to the hull like in the strv 103 since turrets weigh a lot, especially for such a heavy cannon. Two or three man crews would probably be the way to go, i'm not quite sure which is lighter, an autoloader or another crewman. What do you think this kind of small tank would weigh? Maybe 5 tons?

Now this little tankette (not sure if that's a proper term since it has a full power gun) wouldn't obviously be as effective as a MBT alone but for the price of a MBT you could build two or three or maybe more of these small buggers all mounting a full power gun, i wonder how effective they would be on the modern battlefield.

Or maybe trying to mount a big gun to a small vehicle is just dumb and ATGM's should just be used instead.

Now pic related probably couldn't mount a MBT gun but increase the weight (2.75 t to 4.78 t) by 50% and maybe it could.

The IMI website says that 100mm Soviet is the smallest caliber that can consistently punch through any fortification that they regularly encounter.

But they're still probably going to put a full 120mm low-recoil tank gun on their 35 ton IFV.

How come that pro athletes are considered on their way out as soon as their early 30s compared to SOF where 40yo dudes are considered to be in prime and are also expected to be on top athletic level as well?

Present to me a situation where you would be better defending yourself with a sword rather than pulling our your service pistol or backup weapon. Also have fun sprinting after people and riding in a car while wearing a sword.

this is actually what causes limp wristing
>>
>>34096705
so if you glue an automatic weapon to a wall, it stops working? wot
>>
>>34096708
No, it will work. It may malfunction if it was attached to a spring that would absorb much of the recoil. However, the inertia within the parts of the firearm would probably allow it to function. As stated, limp wristing is a thing where the operator of a firearm doesn't allow the recoil to properly hit them, this generally refers to pistols.

Yup you read that right. Luckygunner did a comprehensive study on .38 special and .357 Magnum and found .38 to be weak as fuck(no surprise), but what stuck out to me was how during these ballistic tests the 9mm fired from a compact pistol has the same ballistic properties as a .357 from a 4 inch barrel. Now before everyone wants to shoot me for even saying that I ask that you first watch the video or look at the chart before coming to a conclusion. I am just as surprised and confused as ever at old 9mm. Here's the video-

Semi-autos are closed environments, and thus 9mm retains its energy and velocity much better

.357, even out of a 4" barrel, still has to deal with cylinder gap

I'm thinking of going with the Bersa Thunder Combat Plus

I'm going to want ammo that's cheap enough to practice with, with low enough recoil for someone who's handled rifles but never owned a pistol, with single/double action so I can get reduced trigger weight on the first shot and deter with sound somewhat like a shotgun pump, decent sights and a print pattern along the grip rather than along the barrel (I carry tools a lot so a horizontal print is less conspicuous to those in my relatively crime-free surroundings)

Is this a good choice for a first home defense/possible carry/glove box gun?

>>
>>34096274
straight blowback and an alloy frame are going to negate most of the recoil benefit of .380.

I also personally don't trust bersas enough to
trust my life to one, heard and seen too many bad things.
For the price the doublestack bersas are going you could get an arguably better gun.
In the end you could do worse, but you could do better.

I had an old guy in a gun store just yesterday tell me that 5.45 is often referred to as a poison bullet. He said,
>"The Russians called it the poison bullet because it doesn't matter where you get hit with it, leg, anywhere, you're done. That part of you is done because it messes you up like poison."
I wanted to believe.

They were used for a brief period. About a hundred to two hundred years at absolute max, from POSSIBLY the very late 15th century to the later 16th and earlier 17th centuries, and later as a ceremonial weapon. From what we can tell from the texts for similar weapons from other countries (no German large two handed sword texts survive to my knowledge, but some Italian texts describe their use.

From what it seems, they were mainly used by guards. Especially guards of company standards or officers. The texts describe large swooping cuts to try and keep larger groups of enemies at bay. You can also often grip them further up the blade, which is why many have an unsharpened area and a smaller "secondary guard". This gives extra control when fighting a single guy. In a lot of ways, in single combat you use it like an all metal spear or polearm. Thrusts and smaller cuts rather than the big sweeping cuts you see in fiction.

Yeah. They had their use.
