I've never heard a soild explanation. It was under patent protection for a long time, but I'm sure its expired by now. It seems like a pretty neat idea, but I have no idea how well it actually translates into real world use.

No because power consumption and air resistance. The issue with guns of any sort is they need their full velocity at the muzzle. They can't accelerate in thinner air, they need extra force to plow through thick ground level air and still be going fast.

Since you want one for home defense, consider looking into a Beretta 92A1. It's got an all-metal construction that makes it easier to shoot than any of the polymer framed guns, is incredibly durable and reliable, and has cheap magazines and a good aftermarket. The 92A1 in particular is great because it updates the 92FS design by doing things like adding a frame buffer, adding a rail to the dust cover, upping the magazine capacity without making the gun larger, and beveling the magwell. It's a little above your price range--it can be found for ~$550 in my area--but it is worth it.

There are a few caveats though. It's not a great gun for CC because of its size, but that's irrelevant when it comes to home defense. It also has a grip that many people find large. This can be adjusted by buying lower profile grip panels to replace the default ones if need be.

Because there is little point in that configuration of aircraft. The DH Mosquito Tsetse variant was fitted with a 57mm 6 pounder AT gun and autoloader, and they even tried a 96 mm 32 pound gun at the end of the war, but it was still decided that rockets were more practical.
