>Sgt. Baker refused to be moved...preferred to be left to die rather than risk the lives of any more of his friends.
>A short time later, at his request, he was placed in a sitting position against a small tree.
>Sgt. Baker refused [assistance], insisting that he be left alone and be given a soldier's pistol with its remaining 8 rounds of ammunition.
>Sgt. Baker was propped against a tree, pistol in hand, calmly facing the foe.

Drives me up the wall when guys talk about how they need a pile of ammo to "defend themselves."

Reminds me of that story about the three US marines who were sent out to recon a Japanese camp on Saipan. Two Marines got injured or became sick due to the jungle conditions and had to wait behind whilst the one lone marine continued on. He stumbled upon a medium sized Japanese camp in the night with one lone sentry guarding it and bayoneted every Japanese soldier as he slept. Wiped out an entire battalion. It's highly similar to the OPs story in the sense it didn't happen either.

Hey guys, pizza driver here. I had a run-in with a dog yesterday (thankfully got nothing worse than a bruised ass), but I want to learn how to defend myself from those kinds of threats more effectively. I can't carry at work (company policy, and besides I'm 20, a year under being able to get a CCW permit in my state), so any solutions need to require nothing more than a flashlight, pen, keys, or my bare hands. Thanks in advance!

Carry around a stick and hit them on the nose if they are agressive
>>34196724
Ever heard of pepper spray,Tear etc.?
It doesn't kill the animal, so its a lot easier trying to get out of that one, and the dog will piss off.
Its also easily carryable

I am trying to draw a person with modern equipment whose look is inspired by ancient Roman legionaries. To emulate the lorica segmentata, I wanted to use straight, thin mag pouches horizontally in vertical columns on the chest.
But the problem is, I'm concerned about what is the best weapon and magazine to go with. I want it to be plausible, though not necessarily practical. Like, he needs to be able to wear it and still move and be able to get the mags out. But he doesn't have to be able to do it well. I was going to use a P-90, because it has better armor penetration than SMG's pistol cartridges, but the mag looks like it may be too long.
In the pic related, I have a guy wearing 5 cell Thompson 20 round mag pouches. I think I could go with something slightly longer (25 rounds in 9mm?), but not much. I'm guessing 30 round Thompson mags, for example, simply wouldn't fit.
The gun should ideally not be too big. I'd like to pair it with a ballistic shield; a small short range gun and rectangular shield to match the gladius and scutum of a legionary. Again: not super practical, but technically functional. Let's assume this guy is ridiculously strong.
So, /k/, what is the gun and mag size I should use?
Requirements:
-should be an SMG, machine pistol, or PDW
-Needs to be straight magazines
-need to be able to fit two columns of horizontal pouches on the torso
Bonus:
-the higher capacity the better
-armor penetration is a plus
-ideally something not TOO exotic

personally if I were trying to do a modern day roman, as a character design (I used to work in the videogame industry when younger) I'd say a more effective way to convey "roman" would be to have pteruges on waist and shoulder - the leather strap-like segments which are seen on most classical roman depictions. They create the line shape you're trying to capture - so much so that medieval "alla antiqua" armour was made with those as the main detail to say that it was "classical" armour - even when the rest was utterly anachronistic.
So, do a body armour plate carrier with modern camo/khaki textiles in texture and surface detailing, but then have shoulder defences as the textile covering for plate inserts that arch over, in the same way as the lorica's spaulders do, and then trim it with matching material pteruge strips that go down the upper arm, and on the waist - perhaps they've light ballistic armour inside, or the likes. Those, as a visual element will say as much that its roman, as anything else. I would then put a smaller number of ammunition pouches on the belt and strapping to echo the baldric for the Gladius, so you have the diagonal strap over the lorica, to help that visual style further.
I'd also do a modern combat helmet, but with earpieces that go down and forward to mirror the roman helm style, but keeping the face exposed - lets you see the character. Stuff like NV equipment could be attached on easily enough.
Use little design hints to tie it all together.
Pugio combat knife, in place of a modern clip-pointed knife. If you can justify it, large lexan style riot shield of Roman scutum shape and size?
As for the firearm, keep it simple, go with a straight silhouette that's easily recognisable, rather than anything fancy and organic - like the Gladius you want something that's straight if possible, (so _not_, for instance, something with curved fore-grips like the P90.). I would be inclined to say H&K Mp7 or G36k style profile, perhaps.

Mine was a break action .243 that I can't even remember who made it. I killed my first deer with that rifle.
I still kinda miss it
My first gun was a commercial Chinese SKS that my dad gave me when I turned 18. He bought it for $100 and gave it to me. I sold it for $400 right after Sandy Hook (with his permission)
The first gun I bought with my own money was a SMLE a few days after getting the SKS. I traded that for a Browning Auto 5 two or so years ago, then I sold the Auto 5 and put that money into Slav optics

> U.S. Army weapons officials have launched a survey to see what gunmakers can offer for an off-the-shelf 7.62mm Interim Combat Service Rifle.
> The May 31 request for information, known in acquisition parlance as an RFI, on behalf of Product Manager Individual Weapons, is an attempt to "identify sources for a combat rifle system" and determine the potential cost and lead time to deliver up to 10,000 weapon systems, according to the document.
> The request comes in the wake of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley told lawmakers Congress last week that the M4 Carbine's current 5.56mm round can't penetrate modern enemy body armor plates and that he's considering arming infantry units with rifles chambered for a more potent 7.62mm cartridge.
"The rifle must be a Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) system readily available for purchase today. Modified or customized systems are not being considered," according to the document, which specifies that the caliber must be 7.62x51mm.
> Milley told Senate Armed Services Committee members May 25 that Army officials at the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning in Georgia, have developed a new 7.62mm round capable of penetrating enemy body armor plates similar to U.S. military-issue rifle plates such as the Enhanced Small Arms Protective Insert, or ESAPI.
> [...]
> The Army would want an Interim Combat Service Rifle to have either 16-inch or 20-inch barrels, a collapsible buttstock, an extended forward rail, and a detachable magazine of at least 20 rounds, the RFI states. The rifle should weigh less than 12 pounds unloaded and without an optic.
> [...]
Well lads, what are their options? Can't they just use the current M14 or unearth some old SLRs?

Discuss WA stuff.
For example I want to go hiking/camping somewhere. Where should I go? Also, I'm looking for a non static range, where I can move from target to target and not just stand there firing one round every 2 seconds. Is there a range like this west of the Cascades or do I need to find my own innawoods pit?

Innawoods is best. I usually go to Capitol forest that is North of Olympia. 100k plus acres of all that land you can shoot in.
